** 1st Lieutenant Joshua Jarosechek (American) was a miners son from Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania before he managed to get into college and get into the United States Marine Corps as an aviator, flying [=F4F=] Wildcats.
** Ensign Ted Sullivan (American) was a engineering student at Georgia Tech and dropped out due to failing grades. As an alternative, he enlisted into the United States Navy as a Naval Aviator, and although failing to be a fighter pilot, is now a navigator on a PBY Catalina in the Philippines. [[spoiler: He dies on December 20, 1941 when the PBY he was flying in gets shot down after being jumped by three Japanese fighers and tumbles into the sea.]]
** Anne Marie Jeanne d’Orlong (French) was a simple farm girl from the countryside near Strasbourg, France, before she became a spy for the French Resistance and British Intelligence and moved to Paris and feeds movements of German forces and positions to the appropriate source.

** Sergeant Patrick Donohue (American) was a mill worker and junior mechanic in Lowell, Massachusetts and only joined summer camp for the Massachusetts Army National Guard before he joined up with the United States Army and rose through the ranks

Due to the effects of TheGreatDepression in America, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and his Democratic Party, fresh off a electoral victory in the United States Presidential Election of 1936, decide, to help the sluggish economy recover from the chaos of the Depression, to read up on the economic theories of John Maynard Keynes, and his words on governmental intervention in the economy and, most importantly, using governmental spending to help stimulate the economy rub off on them.

Due to Keynes' economic theories, the revised 1937 version of the Emergency Relief Appropriations Act, while stripping funding from the Works Progress Administration, included a huge expansion of the United States Armed Forces, which included the reinforcement of the Philippines, the splitting of the US armoured forces from the infantry, the sending of 16 tankers to Standard Oil and, most importantly the construction and addition of 3 heavy cruisers, 6 light cruisers, 24 destroyers and 1 additional aircraft carrier for the United States Navy......
