* MidSeasonUpgrade: The second season of the anime sees the survivors of Spearhead Squadron switch to the Federacy's newly developed Reginleif. Although heavily inspired by the design of the Republic's infamous Juggernaut, the Reginleif makes a number of notable improvements. These include better armor, a heavier gun, and more pilot survivability features. All of this comes at no cost to speed and maneuverability thanks to a superior powerplant.

All The infamously-weak legs (and overall structure) of this comes the Juggernaut has been dramatically improved, with the Reginleifs easily withstanding maneuvers that would have damaged the legs of the Juggernaut without any worry at no cost to speed all. They're almost twice as fast, they carry multi-use "pile-driver" weapons in each of their legs, and maneuverability thanks are designed to be able to swap out their main gun for alternative armaments, including a superior powerplant. lighter autocannon, a long-barreled auto-loading howizter, and a big MLRS missile pack capable of wiping out an entire horde of Legion in seconds. Notably, Shin is able to perform a ColossusClimb of a giant Legion while taking multiple hits and getting two of his Reginleif's legs knocked off.

* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: When the Legion finally launch the massive assault that Shin has predicted for months, he gets even more serious and grim than usual, and tells Raiden that he's "waking the entire army". The next shot shows him ''pointing a gun at a high-ranking officer in a command post'', ordering him to fully mobilize everyone he can immediately. Cue a cut to soldiers in the unit saying that Shin is going to be shot if this was all for nothing--only for a ''massive'' wave of Legion to start hitting the entire Western defensive line. Shin even tells Raiden that his ability to hear the thoughts/feelings of the Legion is giving him such a hard time that no one should link with his Para-RAID unless absolutely necessary. Given that Shin outright states that the attack is matching his worst case scenario, Raiden is unnerved to see that even ''Shin'' looks afraid and downright alarmed.

** Episode 6 is almost entirely anime-original. The first part of the episode is a flashback showing how Spearhead Squadron was formed as they get to know each other and speculate on what their new Handler will be like (much of the dialogue is taken from the Black Tag Daily Life short story). ** Episode 7 begins by showing how Lena was able to smuggle a package of celebratory fireworks to Spearhead Squadron by bribing a supply officer. This was implied in the novel but not explicitly confirmed.

In this world, the war is still ongoing as of Stellar Year 2148, but millions of lives have been saved compared to the main timeline, all the world's countries are working together to fight the Legion, and Shin, Annette, and Lena are all just ordinary teenagers going to school together.]]
** On the more lighthearted side, the ''High School - IF / Operation High School'' AU is just a story set in modern day Japan where everyone is a high school student.
** On the very humorous side, there is also the sci-fi magical girl spinoff where Lena and Annette are magical girls defending the space battleship ''San Magnolia'', collected in three short stories.

* SteelEardrums: Zigzagged. The light novel tells us that the Reginleifs are fully sealed against chemical and biological attack, so that would provide reasonably good protection against loud noises as well, but the original San Magnolian Juggernauts were nowhere near that level of protective, with many of them even having holes in them. The anime averted this in Episode 22 [[spoiler: when the Morpho's self-destruct temporarily caused Shin to go deaf due to his close proximity to it: he can be seen tapping his ear when he wakes up and not hearing anything.]]

The Noirya faith superficially looks like Catholicism, has the societal trappings of the Hindu caste system, and the actual tenets of the religion take elements from Greek fatalism and pagan goddess worship.

** [[spoiler: Noiryanaruse is this on a much larger scale.]] The past 11 years of war have seen nearly every adult die, and Lena realizes with some shock after she spends some time there that the oldest people still alive are only in their early twenties.
