* AffablyEvil: Kithyr, the Taiytekei and the dragons can all be polite, friendly and in the dragons' case, even heartwarming at times. Usually right before they kill a whole bunch of people.

* AmbiguouslyEvil: It's probably easier to list who ''isn't'' than who is.

** Vale goes from being the nameless leader of the Adamantine Guard to the hero of ''Order of the Scales.''
*AwwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: The last thing [[spoiler: Jehal]] calls out before he dies? [[spoiler: ''Zafir.'']]

* BadassBookworm: Vale Tassan.

The possible exception is Vale Tassan, the Night Watchman. * BrotherSisterIncest: Well, actually it's sister-sister incest. [[spoiler: Lystra and Jaslyn.]]

* DemotedToExtra: [[spoiler: Shezira]] goes from being a major protagonist and one of the few genuine "good guys" in ''The Adamantine Palace''(though that may merely be because [[spoiler: she]] simply had no opportunity to do anything bad) to speaking in only one chapter in ''The King of the Crags.'' [[spoiler: The effects of her imprisonment are felt throughout the series, however.]]
* DemonicPosession: Siff suffers from this.

* GoMadFromTheRevelation: Silence MindRapes a Scales by telling him the truth of dragons.

* MoralityPet: Lystra to Jehal, and sometimes Kemir to Snow.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Jehal has a few moments sometimes. Usually they don't last.

* PosessionBurnout: Eventually [[spoiler: Siff.]]

* RealAllAlong: ''The Black Mausoleum'' in particular plays with this, but in the series as a whole there are continous debates on whether or not [[spoiler: the Silver King]] actually exists, and what happened to him after he [[spoiler: "tamed" the dragons.]] The climax of the fourth book seems to prove it.

* AscendedExtra: Kataros. In ''The Order of the Scales'' she was merely Kemir's love interest. In ''The Black Mausoleum'' she's a competent and powerful blood mage and the true hero of the book.

* DysfunctionJunction: The quadrat in ''The Black Mausoleum'' all have serious issues; Kataros is a BrokenBird and persecuted by everyone due to being an alchemist, Jasaan is sick of life, Skjorl borders on CompleteMonster, and Siff's just batshit insane.

* SociopathicHero: Skjorl.

* SympatheticPOV: Another deconstruction involving Skjorl. At first, during his chapters, Skjorl appears simply to be a hard-hearted but pragmatic AntiHero. However, when we see him through the eyes of other characters, he's as much a monster as the dragons he hunts, and that's even before we get to [[TheReveal Scarsdale...]]
** Likewise with Siff. He thinks of himself as a survivor. Everyone else thinks he's insane and dangerous.

* [[TitleDrop Title Drop:]] Everyone wants to be in the Adamantine Palace. The King of the Worldspine is known as The King of the Crags. Dragons are kept drugged to their eyeballs by The Order of the Scales.

to:

* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Vale and Jehal in the first three books embody this, but this trope is heavily {{deconstructed}} in ''The Black Mausoleum,'' where ''none'' of the main characters like each other at all.

''A Memory of Flames'' is a fantasy trilogy written by Stephen Deas. It consists of three books: ''The Adamantine Palace'', ''The King of the Crags'' and ''The Order of the Scales''.

Once, dragons and other strange monsters ruled the world and humans were simply prey. Thanks to the intervention of a mysterious figure called [[TheGhost The Silver King]], however, the dragons were tamed (read: drugged into docility) and became the cavalry of kings and queens, kept in check by a mysterious organization known as The Order of the Scales. It's been so long since dragons were free that most humans have forgotten just how dangerous they truly are.

Instead, they play games of twisted politics that would rival Creator/NiccoloMachiavelli's works. Their ultimate goal is to become the speaker--the king of kings--and reside in the [[TitleDrop Adamantine Palace]]. They will do anything to achieve that, including murder.

Then one day a dragon named Snow, the first perfect white to have ever been bred, escapes from captivity. Aided by a revenge-driven mercenary named Kemir, they seek to free all dragons from their slavery and return the world to its former state of dragon rule--which would be [[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt mankind's destruction.]]

* [[CrapsackWorld Crapsack World:]] For the nobles, perhaps not so much, but if you're an Outsider, this most certainly applies.
* [[DecoyProtagonist Decoy Protagonist]] Deas likes this trope. In the first book, we have [[spoiler: Shezira and Sollos]]. In the second, we have [[spoiler: Semian and Jostan]].
* [[DragonRider Dragon Rider:]] Subverted in that although Kemir does indeed ride on Snow's back, she's the one in charge.
*[[TheEmpath Empath]] Awakened dragons can read feelings, and their own emotions are projected onto those around them. Since dragons are usually always enraged, the effect on humans is...not pretty.
*[[TheEndOfTheWorldAsWeKnowIt The End of the World As We Know It:]] ''This is how the world will end...in flames.''
* [[GiantFlyer Giant Flyer:]] The dragons.
* [[HorseOfADifferentColor Horse of a Different Colour:]] Again, the dragons--but only when they're drugged.
* [[HiddenBadass Hidden Badass:]] Lystra in the third book. Winning a duel after just giving birth? Awesome.
* [[HumansAreBastards Humans Are Bastards]] Dragons certainly think so.
* [[IronWoobie Iron Woobie:]] Poor Kemir can't catch a break.
* [[OurDragonsAreDifferent Our Dragons Are Different:]] In Deas' universe, dragons are at least fifty feet tall, were apparently created by magic, don't need to breathe, are capable of [[MindRape mind-raping humans]], have immortal souls that simply recycle bodies (which burst into flame when they die) and think of humans as nothing more than amusing food. Did we mention they used to rule the world? Did we mention that humans have been keeping them as pets?
* [[PsychicLink Psychic Link]] In the third book, Snow and Kemir develop one.
* [[RootingForTheEmpire Rooting For The Empire:]] After seeing the way dragons have been treated, you might well be on Snow's side.
* [[Telepathy Telepathy]] Dragons speak using this.
