** In the Anime/SuperDimensionFortressMacross[=/=]Anime/Robotech episode, "Pineapple Salad/Goodbye Big Brother," it should have been obvious what was going to happen with Hikaru Ichijou/Rick Hunter's senpai/brother, Roy Focker/Fokker, but the usual standard bowdlerization of 1980s American television animation made Western viewers assume that the show would take the safe route. When the show actually followed through and killed him off, it showed this was no ordinary animated series on North American TV. MoralGuardians raised a fuss and complained that it was bad for children.

All Deaths Final settings without frequent fake out deaths don't qualify for this trope per the description

* Manga/AkameGaKill is quite cruel when it comes to this. There is no Imperial Arm that can bring people back from the dead. And to make matters worse, at least one death is guaranteed in an Imperial Arm fight. By the end of the series, only Tatsumi, Tsundere Mine, Akame, and Najenda are alive among the ten main characters. The anime is worse, as Tatsumi and Mine die as well, as well as Akame's sister, Kurome.

* In Manga/DemonSlayerKimetsuNoYaiba, Tanjuro Kamado is the late father of the series’ protagonist Tanjiro Kamado, dying one year prior the series began, with that Tanjuro isn’t part of the tragedy that befell all the remaining Kamado family when they got killed by a particular notorious demon; Tanjuro’s importance is entirely in retrospect as Tanjiro recalls his teachings as the story goes, even the HighSchoolAu spin-off which is specifically about having the entire cast alive and well living through normal lives instead of a tragedy, still has Tanjuro be a late father, while Tanjiro has the rest of family alive in there.

* The final deaths of all the homunculi except Pride in Manga/FullmetalAlchemist. Hughes, Fu, Buccaneer, Kimblee and Hohenheim die as well, and the manga makes it very apparent that they cannot possibly come back.

* The final deaths of all the homunculi except Pride in Manga/FullmetalAlchemist. Hughes, Fu, Buccaneer, Kimblee and Hohenheim die as well, and the manga makes it very apparent that they cannot possibly come back.

* Manga/KenichiTheMightiestDisciple has this happen to a few important characters throughout the story.
** One of these is Sho Kanou, Kenichi's YOMI rival in the D of D TournamentArc, who pulls a HeroicSacrifice by jumping in the way of gunfire meant for Miu; his death affects the characters so much that Kenichi keeps Sho's birdcage earring as a reminder of his promise to Sho IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy to always protect Miu, and Sho's master Akira Hongo (the "God Fist" of the One Shadow Nine Fists) is revealed to be AFatherToHisMen and a JerkWithAHeartOfGold who didn't take his disciple's death very well and later expresses a wish that no more disciples should have to lose their lives.
** Another character who gets this treatment is Silcardo Junazard, the "Demon Fist" of the One Shadow Nine Fists. In this case it's a badly-needed case of KillHimAlready, he violates the unofficial rules which stipulate that master-class fighters must not interfere in fights between two other masters and (more seriously) must not meddle in fights between two disciples, and crosses the MoralEventHorizon by manipulating Akira Hongo into almost killing Kenichi--almost because Hongo, who was fighting unconsciously at that time, realized what was about to happen and pulled back on his attack at the very last second--all so he can take advantage of Miu's resulting sense of mental chaos when she thinks Kenichi's been killed, kidnap her and brainwash her to become his newest student. In fact, the character is so bad in this regard that he ends up getting an utterly satisfying KarmicDeath at the hands of a vengeful Hongo during an EnemyMine with Ryozanpaku, possibly with sanction from the One Shadow (Miu's father) himself.

* Manga/MyHeroAcademia: During the climax of the Internship arc, as the heroes are fighting the main antagonist Overhaul, one of the heroes, Sir Nighteye, is impaled through the chest by a large spike. After the battle, as the heroes begin recovering in a nearby hospital, Nighteye dies after saying his final farewells to his friends, telling them to not mourn him and keep smiling, and using his Quirk, Foresight, one last time on his pupil, Miro Togata, to let him know that even though he lost his Quirk for now, he will still be a great hero in the future.

* Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica killed off Sayaka while the protagonist, Madoka, willingly erases her existence from both the physical world and the memories of (almost) everyone who knew her. Mami and Kyoko were seemingly Killed Off for Real only to be brought back in the final episode.

** The Namekian Grand Elder Guru is an interesting case of this. He shouldn't have been able to be revived due to passing from natural causes (I.e. his old age) making it impossible for Shenron to bring him back. However, the actions of Freeza and his men caused him to die from the stress and despair of his people being murdered as he sensed their deaths. Because of this his death was premature and influenced by an outside force, allowing him to be temporarily revived in a BatmanGambit. Afterwards he dies again for real.

** Prince Kamehame is notable as one of the few permanent deaths in the series. Having been killed saving Terryman from Sunshine's Cursed Roller attack. This is justifiable given his advanced age and health problems. The injuries he sustained were just too much for his old body.
