* Orion Black from Fanfic/TheBlackSheepDogSeries is undeniably an arrogant, bigoted, and emotionally AbusiveParent who tries to coerce his firsborn into performing his duties as the heir to his family's estate, despite Sirius's staunch refusal to remain tied to his BigScrewedUpFamily's obligations and narrow-minded worldview--even resorting to blackmail his son to keep him in line. But he is not utterly unsympathetic, given how he does care (in his own way) about his wayward off-spring, and that his own father is an even worse AbusiveParent, whose idea of disciplining his children includes insulting them and probably using physical force to make them obey (which is the one thing Orion never resorts to, despite Arcturus's encouragement of it). Not to mention, for as much as Orion hurts his son, Sirius often returns to favour just as well. Even Dumbledore sympathizes with him, when a drunk and raving Orion recalls an earlier verbal battle with his son, where Sirius accuses his father of being a "spineless hypocrite with no principles", the morning after Orion managed to stop him from walking into a trap and thereby saving his life.

* Gamzee in , especially the earlier chapters. He has an AxCrazy side he can barely control and does some pretty bad things to his friends (such as half-blinding Eridan), but he's also got a lot of issues and a truly terrible past that makes it hard to blame him for it a lot of the time. He is also at least trying to be better.

* Fanfic/MonsterChronicles: Alejandro and Duncan.
** Alejandro. Like in canon he's a lying, back-stabbing snake, who charms everyone he comes across to further his own placing in the game, and votes them out once they have been lulled into a false sense of security. However, he is the first onscreen victim of Cedric, who tortures him to near death before stealing his soul. Even when he is revived after Cedric's defeat, the sequel revals that the experience left a permanent scar on his face. Furthermore, he is seriously traumatized by the events of the previous story, wanting nothing to do with the game and having become a paranoid, jumpy shell of his former self.
** Much like in canon, Duncan went from a JerkWithAHeartOfGold to a complete Jerkass when he cheated on his girlfriend with their mutual friend. While their relationship was unhealthy, and Duncan was not completely wrong wanting to get out of it, he was ultimately remorseless for the damage he caused. And when a dangerous SerialKiller entered the game, Duncan was more concerned with his bad boy image than anything else. However, one can sympathize with the trauma Duncan when through when tormented by Cedric, who he was forced to work for and who harshly calls him out on his actions. Even when Duncan realizes how dumb he'd been acting and decides to stand up to Cedric, it only gets him tortured and almost killed. Then we see Duncan's past in juvie with Cedric, including when he killed his best friend and nearly killed him soon after.
* Fanfic/UnbreakableRedSilkenThread: Gwen and Heather; the first doesn't take responsibility of her own mistakes and is more than ready to snap at anyone trying to point this out, and the later is... well, Heather. They also have very sad backgrounds, with Gwen being disowned by her mother and being trapped in an abusive relationship, and Heather coming from a terrible household.

* Angel, from the AU Roleplayverse Otherborn, is a half-demon who physically, mentally, and emotionally abuses his charge, Namine, who he claims to be in love with. In fact, he's come close to pushing her over the DespairEventHorizon more than once. Things went downhill when he was revealed to have killed his best friend in a jealous rage over the girl they both liked. And then... well, then the author started writing oneshots and revealed that Angel was, actually, so completely broken by this event that he literally went crazy. Namine was the only person who could put him back together again, but the damage done to his psyche was so immense that his demonic instincts began to take over, turning him into the Jerkass he is today. To the point where when Namine's abusive parents kidnap her back to their mansion, Angel goes into a catatonic state where the only thing he is capable of forming into a coherent thought is that he wants to die. The poor guy just seriously needs a hug.

* From Fanfic/MaimDeMaim, Ryuuko Kiryuuin, as Mommy never quite raised her properly. Sure, she is (or was) kind of an asshole and she's done some pretty messed up things, however, it is clear that she's very much loved and misses her mother and wishes she could have stopped her from , along with the fact that she really hit hard with life, especially the revelations that , the one she's fought and tried to kill at least more than once, is her sister, among other things. Unsurprisingly, as we learn in Ch. 22, .
