* ''Literature/ReignOfTheSevenSpellblades'': Following a pretty brutal one-two punch of BreakTheHaughty in volumes 2 and 3, Joseph Albright matures from his original ArrogantKungFuGuy image into this trope. He's still a grouchy hardass, but he's shifted from [[CatchphraseInsult dismissing weaker classmates as "nobodies"]] to using his skills to help teach them so they can [[InsultOfEndearment stop being "nobodies"]], starting with Pete Reston as an understated thank-you for helping save his life.

* "Literature/TheWrongWayToUseHealingMagic" Rose is abusive and puts her rescue team under [[TrainingFromHell a hellish training]], but only so that her team is fast and strong enough to rescue and survive in war.

** Severus Snape is somewhere between between this and an all out {{Jerkass}}, depending on your point of view. He's highly biased towards Slytherin, he holds a personal grudge against Harry [[spoiler:due to being bullied by Harry's father and his unreciprocated love for Harry's mother]], and routinely bullies his other students for no particular reason other than he's a jerk. However in the end, he [[spoiler:was devoted to Dumbledore, saves Harry's life and eventually gets himself killed by Voldemort for the greater good]]. The good he does also come across as pretty weird when you consider that it (and basically his entire adult life) is based entirely around [[spoiler: a girl he was in love with from the ages of 10-16, give or take.]]
*** He also holds a borderline homicidal grudge against Sirius Black in ''[[Literature/HarryPotterAndThePrisonerOfAzkaban Prisoner of Azkaban]]''. However, at the time, he still [[spoiler: believes that Sirius betrayed (and thus indirectly killed) James and Lily Potter, so the outburst is likely attributed to his life-long love of Lily (Evans) Potter, Harry's mother. Then again, given that it was Snape himself who told Voldemort about the prophecy which placed a target on the Potters' backs, it would still be at least a little hypocritical of him to hold a grudge against anyone over this. In any event, his rivalry with Sirius is much tamer in all later moments in the books when he has been assured of Sirius' innocence, even going so far as checking up on Sirius' safety when Harry has visions of him trapped in the Ministry with Voldemort]]. Not to mention [[spoiler:Sirius and James routinely bullied Snape throughout their time in school, and Sirius tried to feed Snape to a werewolf at one point, so they aren't starting from a great point.]]

* In ''Literature/IHaveNoMouthAndIMustScream'', UnreliableNarrator Ted had gone mad with [[ProperlyParanoid paranoia]] years ago and believed the others were out to get him, quietly resenting them in turn. Yet when push came to shove, he manages to prove HumansAreFlawed rather than the outright [[HumansAreBastards bastards]] [[BigBad AM]] labeled them, as at the earliest opportunity he's able to MercyKill everyone else and end their suffering while [[HeroicSacrifice turning down the opportunity to save himself]] knowing full well AM would inflict [[AndIMustScream unimaginable suffering upon him for this]].

* ''Literature/{{Slugfest}}'': Yash has entitlement issues and admits that he has been a JerkJock who picked on people in the past, but is a lot closer to a LovableJock than a JerkJock for most of the story. He can accept most setbacks and disappointments quickly and knows better than to make efforts at invoking ScrewTheRulesIHaveConnections. More importantly, he starts doing nice things for most of the RagtagBunchOfMisfits in his summer school gym class (such as stopping his teammates from destroying a model one of them is carrying) until they evolve into TrueCompanions.

* ''Literature/BooksOfTheRaksura'': In ''The Cloud Roads'', Selis acts perpetually aggrieved with everyone around her, but was a SecretSecretKeeper for Moon because he was kind and reliable, and later risks her safety to give him some much-needed help. She thaws a bit after leaving the village, implying she was just [[SourOutsideSadInside miserable living there]].
