* It's only for a short time, but when a German officer commands the horsemaster to use Topthorn (whom he named King) to pull up one of the machines. The horsemaster pleads with him, saying he is overworked, and offers Joey who he knows is in better health. Though it takes no words, it's obvious that as Joey pulls up the machine he is giving his all for Topthorn. After things become dire, the horsemaster stays behind for a bit as the others flee just to tell his horses to run.

* Albert is forced to auction Joey at the end of the war, as only officers are allowed to keep their horses. He walks out of the stables with Joey... and is met by the entire regiment. All of them have pooled together what they had to raise money for him to buy Joey back. Even the major put some money in, though mum's the word.
