** Personally, I found it incredibly dark and depressing: "Congratulations! You're in your own personal fantasy world with no pain, where no one can hurt you, and only people you want to exist, and they exist only to please you! CONGRATULATION!" EoE's ending was much less bleak: "yeah, you're fucked up, but you're still human, and so is she; together, you've got a second chance."

**** Right, because that's so in-character for all of them, and they're totally ''not'' human sock puppets for Shinji's will, telling him exactly what he wants to hear to make himself feel better. He's still not in the real world at that point, he's inside Instrumentality, so he's only hearing what he wants to hear.

** Right before Maya [[spoiler:turns into LCL, Ritsuko appears, hugs her and quickly types something on Maya's laptop, which is sitting next to them. Then we get a shot of the screen as the LCL splashes on it, and written on it is "I Nerd You".]]

*** The way that Shinji seemed, in his psyche, to be undoing all the damage that was done throughout the series, and the way that everyone openly showed how much they cared about him were especially heartwarming; if only ''End of Evangelion'' had ended similarly, minus the [[GainaxEnding confusion]]...
*** Don't forget the ''entire cast'' congratulating Shinji for his self-realization! Hell, this troper rewatches that episode to cheer up whenever his depression gets particularly bad. It works, [[GainaxEnding somehow]].
**** Especially when his mother and father simultaneously congratulate him.
*** Seconded. Also a bit of a TearJerker for this troper, but of the "happy tears" kind.
** For this troper, it was after Asuka's infamous MindRape. Asuka is staying at Hikari's house and is not recovering very well, so Hikari tells her that she shouldn't feel bad about herself, and that she and what she has as an EVA pilot done is good and important. This troper had tears in his eyes after that (as did Asuka for that matter.)
** Episode 4, anyone? Tohji and Kensuke coming to see Shinji off, followed by Shinji's apology to them, pulled at this troper's heartstrings hard enough... but then Misato shows up, thinking she's too late, then finally spots him. Followed by [[IronicEcho a more genuine welcoming home than the one two episodes ago]].

** ''RebuildOfEvangelion'' also has its moments, namely, its recreation of the above scene with Rei, and [[spoiler: Shinji/Unit 1 getting back up after being blasted by Ramiel -- who, incidentally, ''[[CrowningMomentOfAwesome melts a mountain]]'' to get at him -- whilst Misato makes a inspirational speech to Gendo]].
*** The scene with Rei... The original version was nice for this Troper, without more. But the Rebuild version... With that new graphic quality... The soft, quiet but wonderful piano... The TakeMyHand... [[ManlyTears BWAAAAAAAAHH!!]]
**** Scratch that, the [[SaveTheGirlScrewTheWorld ending]] of ''2.0'' IS THIS TROPE. Seriously, seeing Shinji HUGGING Rei... it makes this (male) troper want to cry.
*** Asuka's PetTheDog moment toward Rei in ''2.0'', and Rei's response to it (calling Asuka on the phone and simply saying "...Thank you.") It was quite unexpected since the original Asuka detested Rei, but somehow that just makes the moment better.
*** Asuka's attempt to slap Rei in the elevator. Rei catches her hand, and the two see the bandages on the other's hand they got attempting to cook dinner for Shinji. It is at this point Asuka realizes Rei is in love with Shinji. Doubles as a TearJerker depending on which ship you follow.
** ''Neon Genesis Evangelion Angelic Days'' Chapter 2-4 has its take on the battle with the Third Angel. Shinji demands to be sent out to battle in place of Kaworu, and ends up in trouble almost right away, forcing Rei to put herself in danger for him, which in turn makes him have to fight for her. After the battle, [[spoiler:Shinji sees Rei holding her bandaged hand over her [[EyeScream eye]]. Shinji feels bad for impulsively rushing into battle for her, and feels it's his fault that she got injured. But what does Rei have to say after all this?]]

*** In the regular series, Shinji doing all of this would've gotten him into big trouble with Misato. Instead...

** The moment when [[spoiler:Shinji grieves over Kaworu]] has always had a special place in this troper's heart.
** In ''End of Evangelion'', when Asuka recovers from her MindRape. Sure, it was followed by [[spoiler:the most gruesome death in the entire show]], but still!

** Misato's [[GoOutWithASmile smile]] as she [[spoiler:sends off Shinji for the last time]] always tugs at my heartstrings/tear ducts.
