The original is found to be sitting in a police vault in Budapest, because Erika's father had commissioned an art forger to recreate the painting and gave him the original for safekeeping to keep it out of the Nazis' hands, and when the Hungarian police arrested the forger in 1946 they had assumed that the painting was one of the fakes they were taking as evidence. As such, the Hellmans are able to claim it since no one else has a claim anymore. Once Don hands it over to Erika and Joel, the joy of them to having one relic of their pre-World War II family heritage back is very visible on their faces.
