*** While it's not a true BLAM, the scene could have been excised and Mr. Ages could have just told her about the rats.

* To rephrase a point brought up by other tropers and TheNostalgiaCritic, if the rats idolize Jonathan and Timmy so much that they give them statues why the hell doesn't Mrs. Brisby have one as well? She was the one who warned them about NIMH coming to they could leave for Thorn Valley in the first place! If it hadn't been for her, they'd have been recaptured or worse!

** Personally, I think it's because many people (including myself) consider the first one to be Don Bluth's finest work, and a masterpiece of animation. It's dark and mature even by Bluth standards (though not to the point of, say, TitanAE), and has an absolutely beautiful score, with only one song and no elaborate musical numbers. So, finding out that there was a cheaply-animated LighterAndSofter sequel with Disney knock-off musical numbers is more likely to leave a really bad taste in fans' mouths. Plus, regarding the point about bashing other Bluth sequels...let's be honest, has ''anyone'' watched all the Land Before Time sequels?

*I remember in the first movie that Nicodemus said that NIMH's experiments slowed down the aging of the mice and rats, which was why Jonathan never told his wife about NIMH - he and the children would still be young while she got old and died. So it makes sense that she'd be graying by the time the sequel began, but how was she still alive for the ending of the sequel? Furthermore, if that's the case, wouldn't Aunt Shrew be dead by the time of the sequel as well?
* Where the hell was the Great Owl during the time period of the sequel? Missing? Dead? If he's dead, then that makes Jeremy and Cecil seem ten times more disrespectful for using his image to scam other animals out of their money (I'd complain about them having money in the first place, but I think I've added enough to this page).

** This troper personally adored Jeremy, though admits he was awkwardly placed in the film. His early role was important somewhat (saving Ms Brisby from Dragon and flying her to the Great Owl) though that was the problem, his relevance ended after the beginning of the film. It was likely a case of [[AscendedExtra expanding his role from the book]] to give a wider balance of whimsy and comic relief throughout the movie, though contradicted the movie's tendancy to ShooOutTheClowns whenever things got climatic. Perhaps due to being Bluth's first movie, he had more problems with the story and balancing the cast (other characters seem to drift in and out as well, such as the infamous BigLippedAlligatorMoment that was Brutus), Jeremy actually seems like something of a prototype for later comical roles in Bluth movies such as Tiger (the fact the majority of them are also voiced by Dom De Luise only fuels this theory further).

* Why is Jeremy in this movie? He wasn't funny, he had next to no impact on the plot, he kept leading to awkward mood whiplash, and his story didn't really go anywhere.

** The movie changed a lot of details, but it got the spirit of the book right, which is what people mean. It's the same way fans say ''BatmanBegins'' is the most faithful Batman origin movie yet when, in many ways, it changed everything about the story. It got the tone and the essence down so perfectly, though, that the stuff that got changed didn't really hurt anything. The same thing works for ''TheSecretOfNimh''. There's a magical MacGuffin, Jenner's a full-on villain and a lot of the character details were rewritten, but Mrs. Brisby/Frisby is precisely true to herself, the essence of the story is intact and most importantly, it keeps the same mature tone as the book. That's what fans are really talking about when they say it's faithful to the book.

** While all of these fell to {{Sequelitis}} ultimately, they [[YourMileageMayVary arguably]] did at least manage to make at least one half decent follow up. ''Feivel Goes West'' is considered almost as enjoyable as the original ''AnAmericanTail'' to some fans and a more plausible use of the LighterAndSofter (or DenserAndWackier depending how you see it) concept, similarly ''AllDogsGoToHeaven'' 2 is considered watchable. Both were much higher budget and even got theatrical releases. ''TheLandBeforeTime'' is more infamous with it's sequels though the first couple were plausible (arguably the second film's only true folly was it's use of musical numbers). ''Timmy To The Rescue'', while above some of the worst examples of these series (eg. ''All Dogs Christmas Carol'', the majority of Land Before Time sequels after 2 and 3) but significantly poorer than their best. They could have at least put the effort into making one quality sequel like the other series, especially since NIMH only made that one.

** Plus I think the reason the Secret of NIMH 2 bashing looks a little off is because it seems more venomous and exaggerated than, say, the bashing for the sequels for The Land Before Time, An American Tail, and All Dogs Go to Heaven. It's an enormous amount of hate directed towards one direct-to-video sequel when there were thousands of them being released during that time period, but, if anything, it proves just how dedicated of a fanbase this movie has compared to the other Don Bluth films.

** Some concepts in the sequel did make some sense and could even have made for good CharacterDevelopment (eg. Timmy being prophecised as a hero, Brutus turning out to be a GentleGiant (which is actually taken from the original book), [[DefrostingIceQueen Aunt Shrew gaining respect for Nicodemus and the rats]], [[ButtMonkey Jeremy's]] [[ThrowTheDogABone slightly warmer treatment by the rest of the cast]]), it's just the majority of them aren't really elaborated on enough and come off more as CharacterDerailment, like there is supposed to be a "midquel" explaining all these plot points beforehand. Also the LighterAndSofter musical elements work for one area and screw up another. Whimsical characters like Jeremy and Evil Martin suit hamming things up and bursting into song, Timmy and Justin, less so. The story concept and LighterAndSofter format arguably didn't ruin it, the execution of it did.
