** Note that in the book, there's a scene where Vizzini seems to be telepathically reading Buttercup's thoughts--though the implication is not that he's got psychic powers, but merely that he's exceptionally good at figuring out what people are thinking. During the Battle of Wits, he seems so confident in the choice he ultimately settles upon (he thinks the goblet in front of him is the one with the poison--until he switches them) that it's evident he read Westley's nervous behavior at a specific point as an indication that he "knew" Vizzini had determined the safe goblet was in front of Westley.

** Even in the film, he very clearly sees the ROUS's around them before telling her he doesn't think they exist--obviously a lie to keep her from panicking.

** The book is somewhat more explicit that Florin and Gilder are located in Continental Europe, but even the movie makes mention of several real-life countries and nationalities (Australia, Spaniards, Sicilians). So no, it's not a fictional fantasy world, just fictional countries within our world.

** Buttercup's not there to bear any children for Humperdinck -- she's the most beautiful woman in the world, and the people ''adore'' her. Former commoner -- incredibly beautiful -- murdered ''on her wedding night'' -- tragic. Humperdinck picked her out to be the perfect martyr, so much that her death would make the people of Guilder rally to war. Once the war is well underway, then he can pick wife #2 at leisure.
