** At the very least there ''are'' models of Persocoms that don't look like human beings in their world. Yumi's portable Persocom looked much more like a non sapient keychain fob rabbit than anything. And she even mentions that her home Persocom looks like a big stuffed rabbit. There are probably a variety of Persocom models beyond the human ones, for those whom the concept of one is a touch too uncanny valley or otherwise for their tastes.

** Aside from the fact that there are explicitly Persocom models that don't look like human beings (Yumi's stuffed animal looking mobile and mentioning her home Persocom looks like a big stuffed rabbit), it's a bit of social commentary in its own way. Humans are lonely creatures looking for ways to find companionship. People want easy emotional outlets that they can project certain feelings onto. Persocoms can largely just act as socially acceptable (in their world) ways to express and overcome that feeling of loneliness. Looking for someone who is ever helpful and always looks pretty and if they let you down there's none of the messy emotional baggage besides missing something valuable before getting a new one. Whether it be Minoru wanting a ReplacementGoldfish for his dead sister (before character development) or the reporters who harassed Ueda after Yumi the Persocom passed. Unless someone really gets to caring about how a Persocom might actually feel, there's no emotional risk about sinking your positive feelings into one.
