It came in two generations: the first, introduced in 1999, included the [=SP2340=], available in .357 SIG and .40 S&W, and standard and compact versions of the [=SP2009=] (pictured here) in 9x19mm. This generation lasted only a couple years and was quickly replaced in 2002 with a second-generation [=SP2022=], which included a Picatinny rail on the dust cover and a redesigned trigger guard, and was available in a full-size variant in all three calibers and a compact version in 9mm. This version was apparently named as such because it was designed for a French police contract - their initial purchase of 250,000 pistols was, according to Wikipedia, the largest single order for service handguns since UsefulNotes/WorldWarII - where it was intended to see use for 20 years.

As of 2023, the [=SP2022=] is still listed on SIG Sauer's website but is only found under the "Other Models" section, no longer having its own dedicated webpage. Rumors currently circulate that SIG is planning to discontinue the model soon thanks to having shifted focus to the existing P220 series for hammer-fired pistols and the newer P320 for less expensive polymer-frame handguns, though the French police evidently plan to keep using the [=SP2022=] beyond the initial twenty years as they made another purchase of the pistols in 2018 (though with a purchase price of around 250,000 euros, this would be enough for only around 1,000 pistols, much smaller than the initial massive buy). The SP2022 is also a popular choice for several other police forces as well, in use with groups like Bulgaria's military police, the Colombian National Police, and Portugal's Republican National Guard and Public Security Police.

The SIG Pro was SIG-Sauer's first attempt at a polymer-frame handgun, developed late in TheNineties by its American branch in Exeter, New Hampshire. Compared to the later and more famous P320, the Pro much more closely resembles the preceding P220 series, sharing the same hammer-fired operation and control arrangement of a decocker with no safety outside of limited variants and, despite its polymer frame, offering the option of interchangeable grip panels (albeit using proprietary wraparound panels rather than sharing those of its metal-framed predecessor). It was marketed as a lightweight, compact and cheaper alternative to the "legacy" P220 and 226 derivatives. Like the Glock[[note]]This isn't S&W's first attempt to compete with the Glock; their earlier Sigma series attempted to directly compete as well, but suffered from design issues like an extremely long trigger pull and was a little ''too'' similar to its rival; many parts were actually interchangeable with the Glock 17. The inevitable lawsuit from Glock led to changes in the design and a large settlement paid to Glock. The Sigma line eventually evolved into the SW VE & then the current SD VE line since S&W wasn't interested in paying continued royalties.[[/note]], the M&P semiautomatic pistol is made from polymer, and is striker-fired, with no manual safety (an optional manual safety was later released as an accessory in 2009). The weapon was designed with ergonomics and customization in mind, with an accessory rail, ambidextrous slide stop, and a reversible grip-mounted magazine release. One notable improvement the M&P has over the Glock is that disassembly does not require a pull of the trigger -- something that has been the cause of quite a few unintended discharges with Glocks.

The M&P comes in multiple versions, varying in size and capacity. Available chamberings include 9x19mm Para, .40 S&W, .357 SIG, and .45 ACP. The single-stack M&P variant meant for concealed carry is known as the Shield. Since its debut in April 2012, the M&P Shield has become one of S&W's most successful products and one of the most popular concealed carry pistols in America, reaching 1 million sales in November 2015 and hitting 3 million sales in June 2019.

In March 2021, S&W announced the 9mm Shield Plus, another model of the Shield series designed to compete in the "micro-compact" category, a new semi-auto pistol classification that was kicked off with the SIG Sauer P365's release in 2018. From the outside, the Plus model looks almost identical to any other Shield 2.0, but the real significance of the Plus is its redesigned magazine that manages to increase the base ammo capacity from 7 rounds to 10 with barely any additional widening of the grip. In January 2022 at the Las Vegas SHOT Show, the Shield Plus was announced to be the first pistol to chamber Federal Ammunition's proprietary cartridge .30 Super Carry with an even higher ammo capacity of 13 rounds.
