* Several reviews of ''FanFic/SonicXDarkChaos'' have criticized the story for its... [[UnfortunateImplications questionable]] racial depictions, ''especially'' its broad-brush portrayal of [[FuturePrimitive Jews]] and [[ReligionOfEvil Muslims]]. However, there something underneath the surface. ''Dark Chaos'' is a CosmicHorrorStory through and through, with the galaxy under the thrall of immeasurably powerful Lovecraftian horrors and alien nations who are constantly at war with each other. Who else wrote racially-questionable CosmicHorrorStory literature? [[Creator/HPLovecraft H.P. Lovecraft]] [[WartsAndAll himself]].
** The Demon Empire in general is a pretty blatant copy of the Roman Empire. And it's not TheThemeParkVersion; it's both the good and the bad, without any sort of embellishment. It brings order, justice, law, education, peace, language, art, religion, culture, and many other things to the galaxy. Unfortunately, it's also a slaveholding state where hedonism and SocialDarwinism rule.
*** It's also pretty brilliant if you take a look at the Bible; the "Whore of Babylon" and the other symbols of evil from Revelation are usually interpreted as Rome, so it makes sense that the Demons themselves would be based on it.
** [[spoiler: Sonic being created by Maledict via CloningBlues]] is a very clever parody of the biblical Immaculate Conception. [[spoiler: Sonic]] was born in a "virgin birth" (cloning) by "God" ([[spoiler:Maledict]])
** At first glance, I thought the idea of a Sonic story taking place in such a grimdark CrapsackWorld was narmfully childish like many Dark Fics , but then I remembered that in the video games Sonic and his world are [[TheWorldIsAlwaysDoomed constantly threatened by demons/aliens/mad scientists/rogue gods all the time]], some of them even going into LovecraftLite territory. When I saw that, the copious CosmicHorrorStory overtones started to make a lot more sense.
** It's easy to dismiss Tsali as an edgy OC MarySue copy of Shadow, but on closer examination, Tsali is in many ways the literal antithesis of Tails - the Joker to his Batman. Tails is humble and kind; Tsali is violently AxCrazy and obsessed with bloodshed. Tails is WiseBeyondTheirYears and very mature; Tsali is a PsychopathicManchild who never grew up underneath his thinly civilized veneer. Tails uses robotics and robots to save the world and help others; Tsali uses them to bring death and suffering upon others. Tails deeply cares for machines; Tsali secretly fears and hates his own mechanical body. While Tails became a hero due to his hard childhood, Tsali was broken by his. Tails forgives slights; Tsali obsessively holds onto past grievances.
*** Or, [[FridgeHorror in other words]], Tsali is what Tails could've become if he had never met Sonic and stayed alone forever. [[NightmareFuel Sweet dreams]]. Although, on a lighter note, it makes Tails and Cosmo falling in love with each other slightly HilariousInHindsight.

* It took me reading [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5169753/21/The_Trouble_with_Weather The Trouble with Weather]] (an [[AlternateUniverse AU]] ''Film/XMen'' fic) about three times before I had a moment of FridgeBrilliance. In chapter twenty-one, Ororo tells Logan that humans had put her in a cage; Logan then wonders if there was some kind of hidden meaning or test in what she'd said, since her expression to his reaction is described as "disappointment," and "her eyes had been searching" as she'd told him about being in a cage. Here's where the FridgeBrilliance kicks in: in the very next chapter, Logan has a dream/flashback of rescuing an eight-year-old Ororo from a cage, and it's revealed later in the fic that Ororo hadn't forgotten that incident. Ororo was hoping that Logan would've remembered it, too!

* After reading most of Peter Chimeara's works as well ''Fanfic/MyImmortal'', I've come to realize that even horrible fiction can be deep and meaningful upon drunken nights and deep consideration. ''{{Doom Repercussions of Evil}}'', itself a parody of twist-heavy pretentious faux-deep fiction, has deep insight into the motives and drive of the human race. Don't get me started on analogues to racism. Then there's ''Batman: Nemesis Fight'', which if played straight and filmed, would be BY FAR the best Batman movie ever made. Why does Robin leave batman? Because Batman has broken his own rules after losing everything. Ergo, Robin loses the will to fight. Regarding My Immortal, Tara Gilesbie creates a fictional world so completely bizarre and surreal that it's hard to call it anything but original. Put simply, gay vampire witch goffs go to a magic school, split on West Side Story style grounds.

* This can occur quite a lot in ''Hetalia Axis Powers'' AU fanfiction. They'll be the obvious relations there, but sometimes you look back at a situation and realise that the author has written the entire base outline of WW2 in the form of a soccer game.

* Back before I became a co-author of ''[[http://archiveofourown.org/works/1319848 Something New]]'', an earlier version of this story had a scene where Scout's mother was described as blushing despite my headcanon suggesting that she's in her late 50s. * ''FanFic/PersonaEG'' introduces early on the Canterbook network, which is clearly meant to be this story's equivalent of {{Website/Facebook}} and is used internally by the Canterlot High student body. The fridge brilliance comes in when you realize that this is ''exactly'' what Facebook was when it was created: an internal social network used exclusively by high school students.

* The FruitsBasket fanfic "Eyes of the Cat" is known for a few things - but two of those things are a lot of filler chapters, and having one of the only likable Original Characters in all of fanfiction - the second is because Kyo and the OC mesh well together (and, thankfully, purely in a platonic sense). Its only if you reread the fanfic from the beginning, and read it all the way through in one sitting that you realize those filler chapters are designed solely to alter Kyo's character in a believable way. Each of those chapters describes events which, on their own, are humorous but plotless; its only when read together that you realize you are actually watching Kyo's character evolve and change in a realistic fashion because of those events while still keeping the main attributes of his original character.

** One might argue that Creator/AgentMatt's works are the same way. For anybody who's read his fanfics regarding ''WesternAnimation/TheSecretShow'', you might've noticed that all of them revolve around the popular OneTruePairing of the show. Well, that's because they're supposed to be StealthParodies of fanfics that pervert the characters to fit the narrative of said pairing being soulmates forever and ever. (For example, "Anita's Birthday Gift" and "Sneaky Agent" both have plots where Alphonse has been given the RonTheDeathEater treatment to manipulate the readers into rooting for Victor, who is by and large a [[PossessionSue Possession]] RelationshipSue.

Tails deeply cares for machines; Tsali secretly fears and hates his own mechanical body. While Tails became a hero due to his hard childhood, Tsali was broken by his. Tails forgives slights; Tsali obsessively holds onto past grievances.
*** Or, [[FridgeHorror in other words]], Tsali is what Tails could've become if he had never met Sonic.Sonic and stayed alone forever. [[NightmareFuel Sweet dreams]].

It's also pretty brilliant if you take a look at the Bible; the "Whore of Babylon" and the other symbols of evil from Revelation are usually interpreted as Rome, so it makes sense that the Demons themselves would be based on it.
** [[spoiler: Sonic being created by Maledict via CloningBlues]] is a very clever parody of the biblical Immaculate Conception. [[spoiler: Sonic]] is born a "virgin birth" (cloning) by "God" ([[spoiler: Maledict]])
** At first glance, I thought the idea of a Sonic story taking place in such a grimdark CrapsackWorld was narmfully childish and edgy for no reason, but then I remembered that in the video games Sonic and his world are [[TheWorldIsAlwaysDoomed constantly threatened by demons/aliens/mad scientists/rogue gods all the time]]. When I saw that, the copious CosmicHorrorStory overtones started to make a lot more sense.
** It's easy to dismiss Tsali as an edgy OC fox copy of Shadow, but on closer examination, Tsali is in many ways the literal antithesis of Tails - the Joker to his Batman. Tails is humble and kind despite his talents; Tsali is violently AxCrazy and obsessed with bloodshed due to his. Tails uses robotics and robots to save the world and help others; Tsali uses them to bring death and horror upon others. Tails deeply cares for machines; Tsali secretly fears and hates his own mechanical body. While Tails became a hero due to his hard childhood, Tsali was broken by his. Tails is hopeful for the future, and Tsali utterly despairs of his future.

** The idea of the Bible itself being a tract of Angel propaganda is a very interesting idea, since it depicts demons and satanic figures as evil, and describes Maledict himself as the source of all evil. Earth is a major battlefield between the two sides; [[WrittenByTheWinners of course Angel propaganda would say that]].

** Even [[spoiler: the Chaos Emeralds being originally made by Satan]] plot twist is surprisingly intelligent, since chaos is typically depicted as evil or demonic, despite Sonic and friends using them for good.
** On that same note, [[spoiler: Sonic being created by Maledict via CloningBlues]] is basically an inverse version of the biblical Immaculate Conception.

* A Franchise/HarryPotter[=/=]RurouniKenshin crossover fic, [[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2737703/1/RuroKen_and_the_Philosophers_Stone RuroKen and the Philosophers Stone]] had Dumbledore talk to Hiko about letting his apprentice Kenshin go to Hogwarts (and that it would be dangerous if he remain untrained in regards to magic). Later, Kenshin (unaware of the 'danger' part) wonders how a headmaster has time to go out of his way to do that, figuring he has to be a busy guy. Then I remembered that not even Harry was personally seen to by Dumbledore before he went off the school, hinting at something a little more worrisome than what's being let on.
