There have also been a couple of throwaway gags which, if taken too seriously, could imply that his mother resents him for not being a girl. If there was a trope for Freudian Sue, Joel would probably be the poster boy. Once Feferi knew she woulddn't have to worry about this any more (because the game was about to start), she broke off her moirallegiance with Eridan, and even given the little bit we knew about Eridan at the time it was pretty obvious there was no way ''that'' was going to end well.
