* AdaptationInducedPlotHole: With the removal of the ''Tsien'' story, the discovery of life on Europa is reduced to ''Leonov'' detecting chlorophyll on the moon. Problem is, the amount of sunlight Europan organisms had access to, prior to the creation of Lucifer at the film's end, was negligible. (The book specifically noted that Europan fauna derived energy from volcanic sulfur compounds instead of oxygen, just as deep-sea vent organisms do on Earth.) There's no reason for chlorophyll to have evolved there.

** Floyd doesn't tell the captain about his visitation from Bowman because YouWouldntBelieveMeIfIToldYou. It's unclear whether he tells the crew after the Monolith disappears. In the novel, he tells the crew ''before'' the Monolith disappears, and Xenia suggests asking HAL whether he saw Bowman. Chandra says that all the evidence of Bowman's appearance was erased from HAL's memory, but because this line doesn't appear in the movie, it makes asking HAL about seeing Bowman still seem like a good idea.

Added DiffLines:

* YouWouldntBelieveMeIfIToldYou: This is Floyd's reason for not telling Kirbuk about Dave Bowman appearing before him.
--> '''Floyd:''' I can't tell you why I know what I know, because if I told you, you'd never believe me. ''I'd'' never believe you. You simply have to trust me. I know that trust doesn't come easy with what's going on.

* RaceLift: Dr. Sivasubramanian Chandrasegarampillai, Dr Chandra for short, is Indian in the novel; in the movie [[AdaptationNameChange Dr R. Chandra]] is played by white actor Bob Balaban. It's not clear whether the character was intended to be Indian in the film despite being portrayed by a non-Indian actor, since "Chandra" is clearly an Indian name.
