Jack's father (Creator/BradPitt) tries to toughen him up for the harsh realities of the world through strict discipline, while his mother (Creator/JessicaChastain) exudes love and mercy. His struggles in reconciling their contrasting worldviews are amplified by the life experiences he goes through, forcing him to confront how he processes love, suffering, death, and the loss of innocence. While the film focuses on the highs and lows of the entire family, it's Jack's [[ComingOfAgeStory coming of age]] that serves as a through line.

This narrative, however, is but one thread in ''The Tree of Life''[='=]s expansive existentialist meditation, which primarily deals with the questions of humanity's place in the universe (dating back to [[DistantPrologue the beginning of time]]) and its complicated relationship with God. This is achieved through extended sequences of abstract, [[SilenceIsGolden nonverbal]], and often SceneryPorn-filled imagery, such that many have called the film this generation's ''Film/TwoThousandOneASpaceOdyssey''. (Apart from the similar thematic focuses, both films also feature work from visual effects artist Douglas Trumbull, who Malick had actually convinced to come out of retirement.)

A 2011 Creator/TerrenceMalick film, [[SpeculativeFiction equal parts a period piece, a family drama, and an existentialist meditation.]] It stars Creator/BradPitt as a strict, disciplinarian father in [[TheFifties Fifties]] Texas, with Creator/JessicaChastain as a kind, nurturing mother, newcomer child-actor Hunter [=McCracken=] as their son Jack, and Creator/SeanPenn as Jack in his adult years. Directed by reclusive director Creator/TerrenceMalick, the man behind ''Film/{{Badlands}}'', ''Film/DaysOfHeaven'', ''Film/TheThinRedLine'', and ''The New World'', it is his fifth feature in a career spanning decades.

''The Tree of Life'' begins as a normal family drama, but in just a little while in it transforms into a gallery of jaw-dropping images and SceneryPorn related to the [[DistantPrologue Beginning Of The Universe]]. Some have called it this generation's ''Film/TwoThousandOneASpaceOdyssey''.

Much like that film, it contemplates man's place in the universe, and it can be considered one of the few "big-budget art-house films". Also like that film, it features work by legendary visual effects artist Douglas Trumbal (the man responsible for the [[Film/TwoThousandOneASpaceOdyssey Star Gate sequence]]) who Malick had actually convinced to come out of retirement.

On August 28th, 2018, Creator/TheCriterionCollection announced that they'll be releasing the movie along with a new cut with 50 extra minutes.

''The Tree of Life'' begins as is a normal 2011 art film written and directed by Creator/TerrenceMalick (his fifth film overall). The film was released after a lengthy production, originating in an unfinished 1970s project and eventually being announced in 2005, missing separate 2009 and 2010 release dates before ultimately premiering at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the UsefulNotes/PalmeDOr.

* DevelopmentHell: Malick began work on a project enigmatically entitled ''Q'' before making ''TheThinRedLine'', only for it to come to a halt. Apparently, Malick used ''Q'' as a basis for ''TheTreeOfLife'', which was finally officially announced in 2005, only to have casting issues, gathering up a DreamTeam of visual effects artists to achieve his vision, and then work '''very, very slowly''' to make everything as good as possible. In short, he's a perfectionist.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: See Development Hell.
** A specific example: Creator/HeathLedger was originally cast as Mr. O'Brien, and his death put the production into a tailspin before BradPitt volunteered to take the part.
** Another specific example: The original cut was said to be over 4 hours long, and Adult Jack (Sean Penn) had a much, much larger role. Penn can barely even relate the script he read and the cut they released to be the same movie.

* WriteWhatYouKnow: Malick grew up in Waco, Texas which is where the film is set. Like Mr. O'Brien, Malick's father gave up on his aspirations of becoming a musician but played the organ at his church. Also, [[spoiler: Malick's brother died (suicide) when he was a young man, much like Jack's brother R.L. His other brother was badly burned in a car accident, which may have inspired the badly burned neighborhood boy.]]
