* AgeGapRomance: Gay is significantly older than Roslyn, and even has a daughter who's close to her age. Guido's pursuit of Roslyn would count as well, since Eli Wallach was about ten years older than Marilyn Monroe.

* BeautyEqualsGoodness: Roslyn is the most beautiful person in the cast, and also the kindest. She's TheHeart of the gang.

to:

* BeautyEqualsGoodness: Zig-zagged. Roslyn is the most beautiful person in the cast, and also the kindest. She's TheHeart of the gang. But then again, Isabelle is her OnlyFriend and she's considered plain. But the two nicer of the men are played by actors who were famous for their movie star good looks in the Golden Age of Hollywood, while Guido is a jerk and played by the less conventionally attractive Eli Wallach.

* BriefAccentImitation: Isabelle says that she's originally from Virginia and lost her accent, but puts one on for a sentence or two to demonstrate. In actuality, Thelma Ritter was from Brooklyn, New York!

* HaveAGayOldTime: Clark Gable's character's name is actually Gay, and judging by the way he interacts with Roslyn and other women, he's definitely not homosexual. Though he and Guido are pretty close.

* HeterosexualLifePartners: Gay and Guido.

to:

* HeterosexualLifePartners: Gay and Guido.Guido have known each other a long time and compete somewhat respectfully for the same woman.

Added DiffLines:

* LettingHerHairDown: Rosyln is wearing her hair up to get her divorce at the beginning of the film. She lets it down when she joins Gay and Guido for a trip to the desert, which also coincides with a happier attitude. While she does get one scene wearing her hair in pigtails, it stays down for the remainder of the film.

Added DiffLines:

* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Guido presents himself as this in contrast to Gay, to make a better match for Roslyn. The reality is actually the other way around - Gay is the more sensitive man, openly telling Roslyn about his failed marriage and strained relationship with his kids, and winning her affection because of his kindness rather than manly qualities.

* DrivesLikeCrazy: Guido. Then again, Guido makes Roslyn fear for their lives when he was blind drives them home from the bar, not helped by him being quite drunk and bitter.only behind the wheel because Gay and Perce are unconscious.

* GenkiGirl: Isabelle is an older example than most, but she's a chatty, energetic presence who fills a room with her enthusiasm.

to:

* TheLostLenore: Guido is still mourning his deceased wife. Some of this seems to be an act however, as he enters the story trying to get with Roslyn, and his wife is brought up only to score sympathy with her.

* MaleGaze: Not even in a serious role could the studio not use Monroe's looks to sell the film. Most obvious in one scene where Gay and the camera both stare at Roslyn's bottom in tight jeans.

* MaleGaze: Not even in a serious role could the studio not use Monroe's looks to sell the film. Most obvious in one scene where Gay and the camera both stare at Roslyn's bottom in tight jeans. Granted it ''is'' to show that he's ogling her, as well it being from the perspective of the other lecherous guys in the bar.

Added DiffLines:

* PlainJane: Isabelle is up front about knowing she isn't a great beauty, and isn't surprised when Guido forgets her name because he's too entranced with Roslyn. She also jokes that she wasn't beautiful enough to go back home to Virginia.
--> "Beauty's a help any place but, in Virginia, it's a necessity. We can't hardly get a driver's license without it."

Added DiffLines:

* SignificantWardrobeShift: Roslyn is wearing a black dress at the beginning, symbolising how she's essentially in mourning for the collapse of her marriage and old life. When she starts living with Gay, she first appears in a white dressing down, and wears white blouses and swimsuits in all her following scenes. Even the dress she wears for the rodeo is majority white.

* NothingIsTheSameAnymore: Gay believes he's still rounding up mustangs like he did in his younger days, but eventually comes to admit that times have changed too much for his deeds to hold true (he's taking mustangs to be turned into dog food) and decides he must give it up.

* AmicableExes: Isabelle is on good terms with her ex-husband, and is happy for him to have married her friend.

* BeautyEqualsGoodness: Roslyn is the most beautiful person in the cast, and also the kindest. She's TheHeart of the gang.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: When Gay tries to rationalise that Roslyn likes him because he's manly and tough, she responds "I liked you because you were ''kind''."

* CityMouse: Roslyn is an urbanite who's not used to the countryside, and is the proverbial fish out of water. Unusually for this trope, the men learn from her.

* HeadTurningBeauty: As played by one of the greatest screen beauties to have ever lived, Roslyn naturally is considered a great beauty in-universe. In the first scene, Isabelle says they stopped using the car because all the local men kept rear ending it for a chance to talk to her.

* JerkassHasAPoint: Gay when he discovers a rabbit has been eating the lettuce crops. Roslyn is horrified that he'd kill an animal who "doesn't know any better", and we never see him actually do it, suggesting she did convince him. However, rabbits can actually prove quite destructive to a farm if there's enough of them (and there's no guarantee it was just one).

* TheLostLenore: Guido is still mourning his deceased wife.
* LoveTriangle: Downplayed. Both Gay and Guido are interested in Roslyn, but never actively fight over her with each other.

* OlderThanHeLooks: Creator/EliWallach was 45 and looking fantastic.

* RunningGag: Multiple times when meeting a man, he showers Roslyn with politeness and attention, while barely acknowledging Isabelle.

* TheSimpleLifeIsSimple: Double subverted. The farm itself is initially presented as a beautiful, serene spot away from the hustle and bustle of a town. And Roslyn adjusts very well to growing crops and living without electricity. However, it's illustrated that in this area, people often have to do whatever they can for money (which is a trade-off for their independence). Roslyn discovers that animals are often hurt for the survival of the humans (and that the dog food is made from horse meat). But it's ultimately a positive lifestyle choice for her, and the ending is happy.

* WideEyedIdealist: Roslyn.
* YoungerThanHeLooks: Creator/ClarkGable was just 59 when he did the film and he looked ''awful''.

to:

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: Isabelle vanishes after meeting up with her ex-husband and his new wife, with the justification that they're spontaneously going to spend the week with her (as the rest of the film takes place entirely up the mountain on the mustang trip).

* YoungerThanHeLooks: Creator/ClarkGable was just 59
Roslyn doesn't want to see harm come to any living thing, and she weeps for Perce (who she barely knows) when he did he's injured in a rodeo.
* WorstAid: In-universe. Roslyn is baffled by Perce not only going back into
the film rodeo when he's injured the first time, but also that he doesn't go to the hospital for his head trauma and he looked ''awful''.instead goes out drinking.

''The Misfits'' became a legendary TroubledProduction. Temperatures in the Nevada desert were 120 degrees in the sun. Director Huston battled a drinking problem and kept passing out on set. Marilyn Monroe's out-of-control addiction to pills was an even bigger problem, which often left her unable to work or unfit to work if she actually made it to the set. At one point production was halted for two weeks while Monroe went to detox to get clean. Her collapsing marriage to Miller--she announced their separation a week after the production concluded--was another problem. Montgomery Clift was going blind. Eli Wallach was the healthiest cast member, and ended up being the last surviving star of the film.

However, she ended up largely a scapegoat to cover up John Huston's massive gambling problems; having spent most of the production gambling, the director ended up $50,000 in debt to various casinos. Production was halted for a week so that United Artists could raise the money (after Huston's begging of friends for loans and donations yielded very little). Marilyn Monroe was initially going to spend the week off in her bungalow, but was persuaded to check into a hospital by her doctor (after the latter was given a call by the director). Once she was in the hospital, Huston then broke the story that production was shutting down because of her. No one on set believed it, but that's the story the press ran with. Montgomery Clift was going blind. Eli Wallach was the healthiest cast member, and ended up being the last surviving star of the film.

* AgeGapRomance: Gay is significantly older than Roslyn, and even has a daughter who's close to her age.

** Gay dotes on Roslyn gently so that she will want him, but has a slightly sociopathic side shown when he tries getting a gun to shoot a rabbit, and fawns over Roslyn in a disturbingly lecherous manner.

* ClothingDamage: The back of Perce's shirt gets torn in the rodeo.
* CourtlyLove: Perce tells Roslyn that he loves her, but his love for her manifests in intense respect and platonic caring.

* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Perce, who had an accident a while back, assures his mother over the phone that "My face is fine. It's all healed up, just as good as new." Montgomery Clift had been in a serious car accident in 1956 that scarred his face and damaged his pretty-boy good looks.
* MaleGaze / MsFanservice: Not even in a serious role could the studio not use Monroe's looks to sell the film. Most obvious in one scene where Gay and the camera both stare at Roslyn's bottom in tight jeans.

Famous as the last film for both Gable and Monroe. Gable had a heart attack just two days after shooting wrapped, and died in the hospital eight days later. Monroe's erratic behavior and drug addiction were making her unemployable. She was fired from her last film project, ''Something's Got to Give'', before she died of a drug overdose in 1962.
