This is the first (and, to date, the only) Canadian film to win the [[UsefulNotes/AcademyAward Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film]].[[note]]Both previous nominees, ''The Decline of the American Empire'', and ''Film/JesusOfMontreal'', were also directed by Arcand. In all three films the principal language was French. In the years since, the following Canadian films were nominated: ''Water'' by Deepa Mehta (Hindi; an English-language version also exists but was, of course, not eligible); ''Incendies'' by Creator/DenisVilleneuve -- yes, ''that'' Denis Villeneuve (French and Arabic); ''Monsieur Lazar'' by Philippe Falardeau (French and Arabic); and ''War Witch'' by Kim Nguyen (French and Lingala).[[/note]]
