When he is captured in a trap set by the Darkseekers, he loses his rifle and thus upon getting free is forced to crawl to his vehicle for a firearm. Relying on one firearm in an apocalypse situation is a very risky tactic; having a sidearm is useful in a number of situations.

* BigWordShout: Neville roars "'''''DIEEEEE!'''''" as he [[DrivenToSuicide launches a grief and rage-fuelled attack]] on the Darkseekers in the wake of [[spoiler: Sam's death]].

* HeWhoFightsMonsters: Done more subtly than in the novel, [[spoiler: the camera pans to the dozens of infected that Neville killed doing experimentations on when he does the same to the one he's currently working on. Anna even looks on with [[WhatTheHellHero horror]] when she sees the failed experiments.]]

* SoundOnlyDeath: Combined with a LeaveTheCameraRunning shot of [[spoiler:Neville's anguished face as he [[MercyKill strangles his infected dog]] just off-screen]].

* ContaminationSituation: Sam, the dog, is infected with a virus that turns [[spoiler:her into one of the mutants. Robert Neville has to strangle his her before she fully turns and tries to kill him.]]
