* SpiritualSuccessor: Many critics consider this film to be one to ''Film/LostHighway''. In both films, the main characters receive anonymous videotapes of their house and are disturbed by the mysterious cameraman's invasion of their privacy. Plus, some of the major characters are named Laurent. [[spoiler:Eventually, the videotapes reveal some skeletons in the closet for both husband characters. There are also ambiguous hints that the wife is possibly cheating on the husband, and both films incorporate real-world tragedies in their themes.]]

* NeverMyFault: Georges refuses to accept any real responsibility for Majid's situation [[spoiler:and later suicide]], even when Majid's son directly confronts him about it. The son even remarks how surprising it is to see how little [[spoiler:a man's life]] weighs upon him. However, this is possibly a SubvertedTrope, as Georges' repeated dreams about Majid imply that he feels more guilt than he's letting on.
