* Comments: While this is a community, all of the stories and artwork belong to the same story arcs and chronology. I cannot tell you how amazing this comm is. The story is mostly told in the form of short drabbles and are typically wonderful little bits of fiction where the characters are portrayed perfectly, and the plots range from humorous, to serious and dark, to downright heartbreaking. The art, for the most part, is gorgeous. This is, in large part, due to the contributions of hime1999. Masuta is a really interesting character because while he does have some things in common with Roy, he is a unique character unto himself.
The only downside to this series is that it's old. Really, really old (At least in lj years, wherein accounts are born, live, and die in the space of 3 heartbeats). Some of the stories may not be available anymore, as some of the authors have purged their accounts, and some of the art is gone (not hime1999's), but the majority of drabbles are still readable. What is left is very much worth reading despite having a few holes.

* Synopsis: The stories in the archive generally take place after and details the evolution of the relationship between .
This story is a spin-off of The Alter!Series (see entry in general fics above), so I urge you to read that first. There are no really solid, over-arcing plots in the Main Archive, which mostly contains "a day in the life" drabbles (to short stories) about the five and is categorized by subject and not chronology. If a story falls into a certain part of the general timeline, it is noted in the story's lj entry. There is a Plot Archive, where specific story arcs, often following their own canon, are listed.
* Comments: This is how a fanfiction of a fanfiction of a fanfiction can go right. I love this series so very, very, much (it's my favorite in the entire fandom). The concept is awesome and everyone is in character. All of the stories are wonderfully written, and are engaging enough that you don't mind that the Main Archive isn't listed chronologically. The Main Archive itself has about 120k words worth of stories and drabbles. The stories in the Plot Archive is where all the things with real plots are, and many of them are gripping and excellent, which is especially true of The Looking Glass Archive. Stay away from the Sun Archive if you don't like feeling depressed, because it is guaranteed to leave anyone with a heart in tears.
Unfortunately, this community does suffer from the same old age problem that the Alter!Series does. It was written back in 2005. On LiveJournal. One of the authors (luckily not a major contributor) has deleted their account. However, the vast majority of the stories are still up. You should read it as soon as you can, not just because the archive is slowly disintegrating, but also because these stories are so wonderful and so awesome.

* Synopsis: Spoilers for the first anime series! After the events that ended with Edward in Germany, he travels across Europe to England to try and find a way home. Hohenheim sends one of his research assistants, Ichiro Masuta, who as it turns out is Roy Mustang's counterpart in this world.

*Synopsis: Crackfic parody. Ed is constantly drunk, and Al is generally depressed. Yet both persevere in their quest to restore their bodies through the legendary Internet, a mythical power said to hold unimaginable forces. However, a hidden, stupid evil awaits...
*Comments: A surprising funny and very amusing fic; each character's personality is twisted to the right blend of parody. The usage of the storyline from the manga/anime keeps it on track and makes it easier to know what's going on, making it a great balance of humor and adventure. Definitely one of those cases of BetterThanItSounds.

* Synopsis: Mustang's subordinates decide to take matters into their own hands, coming up with a plan to get the Colonel and his Lieutenant together. But they weren't prepared for this.
* Comments: Much like in "The Incompetent Matchmakers," recommended above, Havoc, Breda, Falman and Fuery decide to get their two lovesick superiors together. However, this story is different -- Mustang and Hawkeye figure out early on what their friends are up to, and decide to play the game their own way. Hysterically funny right up until the last few paragraphs, when it swerves very powerfully into sweetness.

* As a general warning, this author writes mostly Roy/Ed, so if you can't stand that kind of stuff you may want to give this one a pass. If you CAN stand it, give it a look. The writing style is wonderful, especially with descriptions. Special mention goes to the author's current project, The Saffron Soul. I could go on for hours about how wonderful this story is, how interesting the plot is, how vivid the pictures it paints are, how each chapter has me on the edge of my seat... it's just awesome. Really.

* Synopsis: Everyone's favorite doctor - and why he hates Roy so much. "There was also that time I worked with that bastard, Mustang. He burned the Ishbalans and I did the autopsies." Rated M for violent themes. Spoilers for Ch. 62. OneShot
* Comments: This is really a dark one, folks - with echoes of Mengele and Schindler in Mustang's rigorous scientific protocol - and yet I've never seen a better breakdown of Roy Mustang's idealism during the Ishval Massacre.

* Comments: Cleverly written, with an excellent and perfectly-interpreted Lan Fan narrating, extremely in-character behaviour from everyone, humour, prose--probably among the best fic I've read, for a rather less-loved pairing. (Read: 3 pages of fic. EdWin has 93. Royai has 121.) The author deserves little short of worship. Oh, and nothing drastic happens. Really.

\n**Alas, this troper cannot agree. I tried desperately to get into the story, but it was just so...bland. It was almost entirely dialogue, which I think was its main flaw. The characters felt sort of flat, since all that was really shown of them was basic actions and their words/thoughts. Oh, and Rose was terrifying OoC. As in, "mega-super ultra slut-bitch" (Author's words, not mine). Whyyy. I only made it half way, though, so...maybe it got better?

*"Synopsis": Oneshot. Scar's brother receives his first shipment of alchemy books. (at the time, mangaverse)
*"Comments": I was just looking for some good fanfiction to read when I stumbled upon this gem. The author lets us take a look at a character who we only see in flashbacks and when Scar shows or uses his right arm. They took a character who's never really thought of as much as his brother and gave him an extended psyche and concious. We see a man who wishes to elaborate the wonder of God's world through knowledge, a peaceful sort of man who wants to have people understand one another rather than wallow in ignorance. This troper admires this idealism greatly because it is also her own idealism. I find the references (which were altered from a medical text book to fit the story) placed througout the story to be interesting because they relate to the thoughts of this character in some way. Definately a good read if you're a fan of Scar (or, though not very likely, his brother).

****This is as bad as it sounds. It's not even written particularly well.

to:

***Normally I hate stories that focus on Roy and Riza growing up together, but this is quite possibly the best thing I have ever read. I can't recommend it enough. The only thing I have to say, though, is make sure you haven't got anything important going on before starting to read. It's a longfic, at eighty chapters long, and if you enjoy it as much as I did you will find yourself incapable of doing anything else until it's finished.

** YMMV heavily. Envy (the killer psychopath shapeshifter, remember?) is way OOC and spends a lot of time angsting about wanting to be friends with the OC, and the length of nearly all the chapters would be halved if the author stopped writing out her conversations with her muses.

muses.
*** Envy does not. He explicitly states that he hates the OC many times and calls her all sorts of names, and half the time they meet he ends up beating her up. The only reason he changes is because that's his assignment: to win her trust so the enemy can use her "psychic" powers, not because he wants to. The convos could be shorter, but they're responses to reviews, not random conversations.

This is a PeggySue fic, predominatly set in the anime-verse, but has bits of manga canon added for flavor.
