** The Kim Dynasty's attempts to use a nuclear bomb against the Race is this writ large. Not only does it not stop The Race from capturing North Korea's capitol, but the escalation causes The Race to use nuclear weapons against humanity and causes the Fithp to become active combatants in the war, ultimately leading to the dropping of the Foot.

* SparedByTheAdaptation: Ussmak, in the book, was a perfect example of the horrors of war on a single soldier. He was drenched in Uranium-rich mud, tricked into being addicted to ginger, and eventually died by being worked to death by the Soviet Union, and no one cared. Here, he manages to make it out of the war alive... although it's a near thing. He's exposed to nerve gas in Lyons. Thankfully, the medicine the Race treated him with had a counteragent, but he's lost use of his legs and is forced to give his interviews from a wheelchair.

** The Race was one for the Fithp. While they had known that there were humans on Earth thanks to the Messages from the Precursors, said messages mentioned nothing about the Race or their client races (Rabotev and Haless). Further, the type of engine the Race uses in their rockets is even more advanced than the Fithp's engines, which made the Fithp worry that the rest of The Race's tech could be equally as advanced.
** The Race gets two with the two new species encountered.
*** The first that they encounter is when they start getting radio signals from a planet that's supposed to have the most advanced tech be horse-drawn carriages. This causes the leaders of the fleet to wake up early, as well as multiple other types of experts to try to figure out what is happening. Coupled with their extremely regimented thought process, Erewlo openly states that he curled into a ball trying to figure out what to do for two hours, since there wasn't a protocol for "The Primitives have advanced way faster than was thought physically possible." The Fleetlord, when informed, thought that the very idea was a prank his underlings were performing on him.
*** The Fithp were just as bad, as they were ''another'' species that was more advanced than the Race that had shown up out of nowhere, and what's more, greeted the Race by blowing their starships out of orbit with advanced weapons.

* ProperlyParanoid: the Race wasn't expecting to be fighting anyone more advanced than knights and a medieval level of technology on Tosev III, yet they brought supersonic attack jets with orbital capabilities, tanks, machine guns, and nuclear weapons. The Fithp weren't planning to fight ''anyone'' and still brought a lot of lasers and hovertanks. It works out for them, because mankind just so happened to need that level of technology to fight and beat.

It works out for them, be because mankind just so happened of what they reveal is resource shortages in their home systems, which crafted a very careful, slow, perfected response to everything with minimal risks. "If you want to go to war, prepare for war," is one of their sayings.
** The Fithp, on the other hand, ''did'' know that there were going to be aliens on "Winterhome," thanks to the Precursors noting the presence of humanity in the Messages. However, they knew nothing about what humans were capable of, and their racial psychology said that in order to be safe, they'd
need that level of technology to fight and beat.conquer these aliens anyway.

One Russian division panics because they got a wrong message that said that the invaders were landing at Corsica, before they think it through and realize that there is absolutely no reason (tactically or resource-wise) to land there and figure out that they're getting bad intel.

** While Atvar is leader of the Race post-defeat, he was still the one who led the Race into the war to begin with. He's been targeted with ''lots'' of assassination attempts since.
** Just because the war ends, doesn't mean that things are going to go back to normal. The Third World War was ''huge.'' Entire nations have ceased to exist, old social orders overturned, and more. After the surrender of the Fithp ship and Straha's capture, there's still a ''lot'' more of the story to be told, covering things like relocation, building new nations, reconstruction, and finding a place for the surviving aliens to live.

* RoleSwapAU: In canon, Straha tried to take over the fleet and failed, and as a consequence he is forced to take refuge with the humans while Atvar remained Fleetlord. Here, Straha ''succeeds'' in taking over the fleet, resulting in Atvar being the one to take shelter with the humans.
