''[[https://archiveofourown.org/works/29520012/chapters/72530550 When in Doubt, Go to the Library]]'' is an ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender'' ForWantOfANail fanfic, written by Returquoise on Website/ArchiveOfOurOwn.

The nail is Ozai sending his son in the Earth Kingdom after scarring and banishing him, hoping for the young prince's demise. However, one Knowledge Seeker took pity on the boy and decided to bring him back to the great Spirit Library.

Wan Shi Tong isn't happy about having an human child in his library, especially a firebending one, but on the other hand he really could use a clerk -- and Zuko really could use the opportunity to become his own self.

* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: As in canon, Zuko is a skilled and stealthy swordsman. However, Wan Shi Tong has given him some kind of blessing, since Zuko's doing these missions on his behalf. How much of the Blue Spirit's activities are just Zuko, and how much are affected by Spirit Shenanigans is unclear.
* MisplacedRetribution: Wan Shi Tong forces Zuko into indented servitude just because the boy is a firebender like the man that destroyed part of the library, in spite of Zuko protesting he personally never raised a hand against the Owl Spirit.
* MookHorrorShow: The brief fight in Chapter 26 is written from the perspective of a group of abusive Fire Nation soldiers. It doesn't go well for them.

* RichesToRags: Formerly the Crown Prince to the Fire Nation, Zuko is turned in a clerk for Wan Shi Tong.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Wan Shi Tong would rather blame bad teachers than improperly taught students, and is aware that children don't always know to ask for more information.
* SpottingTheThread: While going over reports about the genocide of the "Air Legion", Zuko keeps coming across two phrases that paint a very different picture than the Fire Nation preemptively taking out a dangerous threat: "No weapons" and "Minimal casualties".
* SternTeacher: In spite of [[LackOfEmpathy his aloofness]] and FantasticRacism, Wan Shi Tong nonetheless encourages Zuko to read as much as he wants, answers his questions and pushes him to critically think about his nation and History.
* SurroundedByIdiots: Wan Shi Tong sometimes wishes for the ability to strangle his Knowledge Seekers. Since the critters do things such as bringing an human child in spite of his ban or forget to bring the necessities to the new clerk, it's easy to understand his annoyance.

* UnreliableNarrator: Lampshaded when Wan Shi Tong explains the historical national narrative to Zuko -- a nation will downplay events that don't fit their ideals while putting emphasis on the ones that ''do''. Everybody wants to look their best and feel the best about themselves, so they will put together a narrative which enables it.

* HeelFaceTurn: Over a thousand years before the story starts, the Air Nomads were known as the Air Legion and were such terrors that the Fire Nation used them as propaganda for their genocide and even the Earth Kingdom still tells horror stories about them. This or these examples of Surprisingly Realistic Outcome seem to violate at least one of these rules, which disqualifies them: No character reactions (characters get angry, don't forgive, don't change their personality instantly, etc.); Too fantastical (depends on the properties of magic, powers, sci-fi tech, monsters, etc.); Not surprising (a character was warned about the outcome, it's used to provide Karma or An Aesop, or it simply follows normal conventions for this genre or medium); Plot happens (the example only describes an event, but not why audiences would expect a different, unrealistic outcome); Not an outcome (a character just explains why something wouldn't work as expected, or something is just an innate aspect of the setting or character that has a logical reason for being present); More of a Deconstruction (the event has major, lasting effects on the plot, make something more realistic, but not completely realistic, or a parody/fanwork applies realistic consequences to the events of a different work); or fits better under a different trope. See the trope's definition for more details. If you believe a removal was a mistake, please bring it up in the cleanup thread.

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome: The Water Tribes cannot write a lot of books due to the Poles' harsh climate, so they rely on other mediums such as tapestries and bone carvings. Wan Shi Tong complains it makes for messy storage and complicates data collection.
