The two of them were teens with powerful abilities that suffer from a DarkAndTroubledPast with a StartOfDarkness that involves failing to save a close female friend from death (as seen in Kakine's spin-off manga), have confidence issues that lead them into doing what they do to validate their purpose in life, have a tendency to [[IRejectYourReality reject the reality of what they see and substitute them with their own ideals]], and did many morally dubious things in the Dark Side along with having a female companion who cares for them (Mikoto for Touma and Kokoro for Kakine). The difference is that Touma was able to leave the Dark Side thanks to his bond with Mikoto while Kakine further involves himself in the Dark Side with Kokoro being his OnlyFriend. Tellingly, aside from both of their full names starting with a ''T'' and a ''K'' respectively, their abilities and fighting styles are practically diametric opposites to each other. Touma's a CloseRangeCombatant with his [[AntiMagic Imagine Breaker]] being limited to touch and it revolves around the destruction of the supernatural (i.e. magic, esper, etc.) along with his perchance to "shatter the illusions" of others to save them; while Kakine's a LongRangeFighter with [[OurDarkMatterIsMysterious Dark Matter]] being only limited to his [[ImaginationBasedSuperpower imagination]] and it revolves around [[ThePowerOfCreation creation]] by pulling "theoretically" existing matter out into the ordinary world, which goes in line to how esper abilities are described by [[IRejectYourReality rejecting the reality surrounding them and substituting it with one's own personal reality]].
