Blake goes on a quest of vengeance after she learns many of her old comrades in the White Fang have been murdered while her boyfriend Achilles tries to catch up to her. Yang travels with her boyfriend Gilgamesh to seek her mother Raven. Meanwhile, a mysterious third party threatens both Ozpin and Salem's forces.

* AndroidsArePeopleToo: Penny reveals she is an android to her team, thinking she will be rejected. They don't mind.
* ApocalypticLog: On the day she was killed, Ilia made a recording on her scroll in case she didn't make it. After explaining that someone was killing everyone in her unit, she declared her love for Blake and said she was planning to find her so that they could run away together. Then she was killed. Unfortunately, the recording doesn't show the face of her killer.

* ClingyJealousGirl: Oryou gets really angry when she notices Neo taking a liking to Sakamoto Ryouma. During their exhibition match, she tries to ''eat'' Neo.
* CurbStompBattle: During an exhibition match, as soon as it begins, Anastasia freezes Bradamante in ice and throws her out of bounds before she can do anything.
* DistressedDude: Achilles gets captured by the White Fang after they mistake him for whoever has been going around killing people. After he manages to prove he's innocent, they keep him locked up until they can decide what to do with him.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim:
** Cinder reveals that Tyrian Callows, Hazel Rainart, and Arthur Watts have been murdered by an unknown assailant who chopped off their heads.
** Blake sees a news report showing that a White Fang base was attacked and everybody killed. To her horror, she sees her old friend Ilia Amitola's corpse in the background.
** Blake later finds Junior murdered.

** Blake and Roman Torchwick are forced to work together when they are both attacked by [[HeadlessHorseman Hessian]].
* EntertaininglyWrong: Ilia's autopsy reveals that she was killed with both a sword and a rifle, causing Blake to assume Adam did it, even though he was in prison at the time. Blake calls the prison and learns that he was recently released, which only fuels her conclusion. In reality, he was released in order to help Winter's group deal with the killer.
* ForWantOfANail:
** Because of all the changes that happened in ''Fates Collide'', the Breach did not happen and the Vytal Festival happened without any problems.
** Because of Mercury, Emerald, Neo, and Roman defecting and then the murders of Tyrian, Hazel, and Arthur, right now, Salem's only operatives are Cinder and Chloe von Einzbern, but Salem found new potential allies in Apocrypha like Yu Miaoyi and Tamamo Vitch.
** Because Qrow's Class Card (he's a Saber) lists his abilities, Ruby finds out about his ability to shape shift into a bird a lot earlier than canon.
** Blake never had that discussion with Yang about slowing down and letting people help her that she got in the episode "Burning the Candle", so she is still self destructively obsessed with doing things on her own.

Jaune Arc's sister is Jeanne D Arc, who attends Chaldea Academy in the Kingdom of Apocrypha. It is summer break in Beacon Academy, and when Ruby Rose finds out Chaldea Academy, which is apparently year-round, has an exchange program, she invites her friends to join. Team RWBY, Team JNPR, Cinder Fall, Mercury Black, Emerald Sustrai, and Neo (the latter four had infiltrated Beacon as students) join the exchange program, while Glynda Goodwitch joins Chaldea as a substitute teacher to keep an eye on them and to satisfy her and Professor Ozpin's curiosity about the academy and Apocrypha in general. Cinder's group has ulterior motives for joining.
