* ForWantOfANail: A lot of stuff happens differently from canon.
** The car that crashed into Annette's swerved ''just enough'' to prevent the accident from killing her.
*** With Annette still alive, Taylor is much better and chooses to attend Arcadia from the beginning.
** Lung and Kaiser got into a fight that led to Lung getting a kill order and Kaiser being sent to the Birdcage.
*** This causes the ABB to collapse, as not having Lung - and with Bakuda not having Triggered yet - means they are easy prey for the PRT.
*** Without the ABB around, Emma and Alan weren't attacked, so they never met Sophia - who ended up getting caught sooner.
*** The fight causes the destruction of Winslow High, which, among other things, leads Sophia Hess to be sent to Arcadia with the other Wards.
*** When Sophia causes Taylor's Trigger, the close presence of other Parahumans (particularly Panacea, Kid Win and Gallant) causes the Queen Administrator shard to give Taylor extra powers (Shaper's life sculpting, some Tinkering skills related to that, and a Thinker ability that enhances the synthesis between her original power and the other two).

* PointOfDivergence: There are two points where the story changed to lead to what it is. The first is that Anette survives the car crash that killed her because the other car swerved just enough. The second is that Lung and Kaiser got into a fight that destroyed Winslow High.
** Since her mother is still alive, and Winslow is not an option, Taylor attends Arcadia with Emma.
** Kaiser was arrested and sent to the Birdcage, while Lung got a kill order on him, making him run away from Brockton Bay. As Bakuda had yet to Trigger, the ABB falls apart.
** As the ABB disappears, Emma and Alan were never attacked. This means that Emma is still tight friends with Taylor, and they never met Sophia - who, as a result of Winslow's destruction, also attends Arcadia.
** While [[InSpiteOfANail Sophia still causes Taylor's Trigger]] and she still has her PestControl power, having multiple Parahumans nearby causes Taylor's shard to ping on theirs and grants Taylor a greater refinement to her power: she gets the ability to modify bugs from Panacea, Tinkering skills from Kid Win, and a Thinker ability that enhances the synthesis between the other powers from Gallant.

''Bugs In The System'' is a ''Literature/{{Worm}}'' fanfiction by '''mp3.1415player''' that shows an alternate universe where Taylor suffered a Trigger that led her to be able to control bugs... but due to circumstances the form this control happens gets a bit stranger.

Which somehow leads to a number of very friendly giant mantis-like engineer insects going up and down Brockton Bay fixing broken stuff and making the local Tinkers go crazy.

It can be read on Website/SpaceBattles [[https://forums.spacebattles.com/threads/bugs-in-the-system.1088409/ here]].
!!Glory to the Tropes! And to the Hive Mother!
* AbsurdlyYouthfulMother: Taylor is just fifteen when she becomes the Hive Mother.
* {{Catchphrase}}: "Glory to the Hive and the Hive Mother!"
* CrackFic: This story was clearly written for fun.
* CreepyGood: The Hive is full of human-sized insects that are very friendly and helpful, but, still, ''human-sized insects''.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: The first member of the Hive that shows up in story is met when Armsmater finds it dismantling his motorcycle. The Hive member promptly shows him how to greatly improve the motorcycle's efficiency, puts everything back together and teleports away. And steals Armsmaster's spare halberd.
* ForWantOfANail: A lot of stuff happens differently from canon.

* GadgeteerGenius: The Hive members have very good engineering skills - enough that they can not only understand Tinkertech, but fix and replicate it.
* HypocriticalHumor: When one of the Hive members takes Squealer's cloaking unit as payment for fixing one of her engines, Squealer asks if the Hive Mother taught him to steal things. The insect points out that it's funny that ''she'' asks that.
* InSpiteOfANail: Even though Emma is Taylor's friend, Sophia still bullies Taylor into Triggering.
* MutualKill: Lung and Kaiser ended up taking each other out in a fight.
* ShoutOut: When Squealer calls Kilzen insane, he replies that [[Series/TheBigBangTheory he's not, because the Hive mother had him tested]].
* SparedByTheAdaptation: The first nail of the story is Annette surviving the accident that killed her in canon.
* StupidEvil: When Sophia was sent to Arcadia, she was warned to "put on her A game and not fuck up."
-->[[ForegoneConclusion She fucks up. Of course.]]
* {{Troll}}: The Hive likes to have fun with Armsmaster, mostly because of his usual reaction to their shenanigans.
* WhyDidntIThinkOfThat: Kilzen asks Leet if he could invent a machine that would reset his Tinker abilities and get around his main limitation. Leet drops a ClusterFBomb.
