Though the south-west region of the Dark Land (where Ungoliant established her lair) may appear to be just a black wasteland with large, forbidding mountains, a red sky, and a massive trench-like chasm extending from north to south, it is not volcanic, nor harmful to most travelers. It's still a very strange environment to live in, especially in comparison to the rest of the continent.
