''My Dark King'' is a ''Anime/YuGiOh5Ds'' {{Alternate Universe Fic}}. It leads off from the halfway point of Jack's duel with Carly as a Dark Signer with one very simple question: "What if Jack had lost that duel, died, and fulfilled [[LotusEaterMachine Carly's vision]], becoming [[CameBackWrong a Dark Signer]]?"

* OmnicidalManiac: The King of the Underworld only exists to feed on mortal souls, so this is a given. Wiraqocha Rasca's plan to release the other Earthbound Gods doesn't ''quite'' cross the line, but the end result still screws everyone over given what they're capable of. [[spoiler:The Light of Destruction freely admits to desiring the end of all things, being an AnthromorphicPersonification of [[ThePowerOfTheVoid nothingness]].]]

From [[ForWantOfANail that one change]], events proceed drastically differently, mostly in ways that aren't very good. Yusei winds up not being around to help Aki in her duel with Misty and instead gets severely injured by a load of falling debris, Crow nearly gets his face beaten in by a BrainwashedAndCrazy Aki, and then the [[EldritchAbomination King of the Underworld]] gets involved and everything just starts going straight to Hell. [[ApocalypseHow Literally!]] Suffice it to say, this is one fic that takes the already DarkerAndEdgier plot of the Dark Signer arc and ramps it straight up to eleven.

* WhipItGood: Barbara's gimmick, as per usual.

* TheAtoner: Aki and Judai.

* AxCrazy: Player Killer of Darkness.

* BerserkButton: Jack's is trying to hurt Carly. Carly's is trying to hurt Jack. [[SarcasmMode Shocker, I know.]] [[spoiler: Divine learns this the hard way.]]

* ContinuityPorn: The entire story, especially from chapter 11 onward.

* CombatPragmatist: Professor Frank manages to weaponize the energy source lodged in his chest. He does so by chest-bumping his foes.

* [[spoiler: DiscOneFinalBoss: The story later introduces a GreaterScopeVillain, who is eventually revealed to be the Light of Destruction from GX. Apparently, everyone from Rex Goodwin to Z-one (except the protagonists) was just a pawn in his plan to destroy all of reality.]]
* DamnedByFaintPraise: Inverted. Judai's comment that he is a "fair bit" weaker than the Crimson Dragon, only reinforces how powerful he is.

* EldritchAbomination: The Earthbound Gods, obviously. The King of the Underworld takes this to its logical extreme, eventually leading to [[spoiler: an EldritchAbomination fight between it and the Sangenma]].
** Chapter 15 takes it a step even further, positing that the King is in fact [[spoiler: a member of an entire ''species'' of {{Eldritch Abomination}}s, which also includes the already-deceased Zorc Necrophades, Leviathan, and Darkness from the previous two series.]]
** [[spoiler:And of course, the eventual reveal of the [[LightIsNotGood Light of Ruin.]]]]
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Jack and Carly. Kind of the point.
* EvilCounterpart: [[spoiler: Amethyst Archdaemon's Dragon for Red Daemon's Dragon.]]

** Jack plays this role to Yusei.

* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: [[spoiler: Divine is punched so hard by Jack, his entire upper body is blown off.]]

* HappilyMarried: [[spoiler:Asuka Tenjoin and Jun Manjoume]]

* InvincibleHero: Subverted. The Signers have been getting their asses kicked up and down the street starting with Jack's death in the first chapter right up to Yusei getting his shit ruined by a pack of ravenous birds in Chapter 12, with no end in sight.

* ShownTheirWork: In a funny example, Jack notes that Goodwin is just using attack names when his monsters are forced to battle each other for the chance to flaunt his knowledge of Incan Mythology. The author also probably counts not just for the mythological references, but the references to quite old parts of canon and tying them into the 5D's world.

* {{Squick}}: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]] with Divine, and his...treatment of Aki.

* UpToEleven: The 12-way duel of [[spoiler: Team Kizuna vs Nicolas and Barbara]]. Only one duel in the series proper had a comparable number of duelists. That duel was also dramatically one-sided, something the writer goes to great lengths to avoid for this duel.

* FiveManBand: The Reaper makes one out of a bunch of minor villains from 5D's and DM.
** TheBigBad: The Reaper or, technically, Jack and Carly.
** TheDragon: Nicolas.
** TheDarkChick: Barbara.
** TheEvilGenius: Frank, Bolger and Clark all fit into this role in different ways.
** TheBrute: Player Killer.

* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: The story started out relatively small in scope, centering only on the Signers, Carly and Jack, but once [[spoiler: The King of the Underworld razes Neo-Domino City]], a bunch more people from all over the series get involved and the scope of the story starts rapidly expanding.
** Indeed, as of Chapter 14, over one hundred characters with speaking parts have appeared in the story. Make of that what you will.

The story's greatest strengths are its familiarity with and respect towards the entirety of the [[Franchise/{{YuGiOh}} Yu-Gi-Oh!]] canon, its expert ability to flesh out and develop minor characters, and juggling a ''lot'' of viewpoints at once, not to mention just being really damn well-written.
