Its portrayal suggests Mao to be a [[TeenGenius brilliant]] AntiHero who's [[LoveMakesYouCrazy love]] drives him to sacrifice everything (and anyone) in order to save [[OneTruePairing his beloved]] C.C. [[spoiler: from her [[DeathSeeker Death Wish]]]] so they can be together again. Forever.

* MoralEventHorizon: His MoreThanMindControl of [[NaiveEveryGirl Shirley]]. Mao himself justifies it as the surest way to kill Lelouch at the time and thus save C.C.'s life.
