** Hell, nearly every Toho {{Kaiju}} is an EnsembleDarkhorse of one kind or another. The most notable examples besides Anguirus are: Biollante, a gigantic rose/Godzilla/human hybrid that operates on sheer NightmareFuel; Gorosaurus, the giant TyrannosaurusRex from ''King Kong Escapes'' who got a CrowningMomentOfAwesome in ''Destroy All Monsters!''; and Mechagodzilla, Godzilla's HumongousMecha EvilTwin that always gives the King a run for his money.

** PeterSellers was hardly unknown at that point, he'd just appeared in StanleyKubrick's Lolita, and DrStrangelove, which was released a month after PinkPanther in England but a full three months before its release in America proved he had sufficient clout to successfully get cast as the majority of the characters in the film with no trouble at all. In fact DrStrangelove was supposed to beat PinkPanther to the box office internationally, but due to the assassination of Kennedy, it was held back for a few months to be [[UnfunnyAneurismMoment edited down]].

Not an example. Tolkien fully intended for Sam to be the greatest hero.

** For a more proper example, Sean Astin's Samwise qualifies. No matter how much people debate about what was good or bad about the series or whether or not the series was good or bad, everyone pretty loves the adaptation's Samwise Gamgee.

** In the Mark Cerasi ''Godzilla'' novel series, Anguirus fights and defeats Gigan by himself, after the cyborg monster totally obliterates several Russian cities and new cosmodrome, and pulls him into the Baltic Sea to his death. Later on Anguirus twice battles the Russian-built super-robot MOGUERA and nearly wins both times (he is defeated, but merely sedated so he can be kept in an enclosure).

** Maleficent certainly qualifies, given the fact that not only does she have a huge fanbase, but she also appeared in many other supplementary media, including the Kingdom Hearts series, and even in things outside of Disney (such as KingdomKeepers), and if rumor serves to be true, Maleficent is even going to get a live action film focusing on her. If she doesn't qualify for an EnsembleDarkhorse candidate, then who knows who does.

** Wedge Antilles can also be seen this way; his appearances in the original trilogy are short, but he's one of your sidekicks in the ''RogueSquadron'' videogames (and [[spoiler:replaces Luke as the protagonist of]] ''Rogue Squadron II'' partway through the Battle of Hoth mission), and in the [[XWingSeries Expanded Universe]], he evolves into a General and commander of the New Republic's armed forces. This may have something to do with being the [[spoiler:only character to survive both Death Star runs]], and the only non-major character to appear in all three OT movies. Wedge is the BadassNormal of Star Wars, the everyman, and the "designated survivor". He has fangirls. We love him.

* Tom Hardy's con-man-type character Eames from ''{{Inception}}'' seems to be shaping up to be this, if the first couple of weeks of fannish product are any indication to go by; he's been getting a lot of buzz around the role, which, for an actor who was supposed to have gotten his big Hollywood break from ''Series/BandOfBrothers'' nearly a decade ago, is probably a relief at this point.

** Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Point Man Arthur is another case. A high percentage of fanworks made are focused on either characters (whether paired with each other or not).
