*** Hope has a number of these. The first starts as a mere lack of will to live. Nothing too major. Then, he gets pushed into a state of TranquilFury against Snow after the man saves him, [[spoiler:believing he didn't save his mother, marking Snow as irresponsible. Needless to say, Hope and Lightning [[TheEnemyOfMyEnemy begin to bond due to their mutual dislike of the man]], with the latter unintentionally giving Hope the will to create a premeditated murder plan. Just to add to the blunder, she also give him a Survival Knife.]] This marks the longest in-game grudge, spanning for at least four chapters. Eventually, he comes to a RageBreakingPoint after fighting a boss, which causes him to [[spoiler:explode with anger, blasting Snow off of a roof, leaving him hanging over the edge while Hope attempts to kill him with the same knife given to him. However, this alerts the PSICOM forces looking for them, who blast Hope from the roof.]] This, however, is passed once the man [[spoiler:saves his life]]. His final, albeit short, one is experienced on the surface of Gran Pulse, where Hope finds that the powerful forces of Pulse are too much for him. He goes on a HeroicSelfDeprecation rant, [[spoiler:which unlocks his Eidolon, revealing the truth that Eidolons come when you are on your last legs to display your inner strength to you]].

* Perfectio of ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsDestiny'' and consequently ''Second VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsOriginalGeneration'' has a wave that will cause anyone who gets hit with it to cross the horizon, due to his sheer power, malevolence, and the fact that [[NighInvulnerability he's just plain impossible to kill off permanently]]. It does help that he himself is an EldritchAbomination by nature. And usually when these people are despairing, he'll feed on those emotions and make himself ''even more powerful''.

* Lily from ''VideoGame/{{Kindergarten}}'' is constantly bullied by her classmate Cindy. In Cindy's mission, she enlists the protagonist's help to play a cruel prank on Lily by dumping a bucket of blood on her. If you go through with it, Lily will decide that she can't take Cindy's bullying anymore and kill herself by jumping into the Nugget Cave, an extremely deep pit in the sandbox. Fortunately, the game's GroundhogDayLoop mechanic means that it doesn't stick.

** [[spoiler:King Vendrick]] from [[VideoGame/DarkSoulsII the second game]], who's built up as a [[spoiler:DiscOneFinalBoss]] until you meet him and see that he has hollowed completely in the crypt. [[spoiler:Meeting his sane self within his memories]] gives you dialogue where he says that he doesn't see himself fit to be [[spoiler:a king]] as much as he sees himself as fit to be a jester. Ouch.

* In ''VideoGame/TheAwakenedFateUltimatum'', if you choose to have Shin not try to save Eri after she is kidnapped by devils, he receives a package containing [[spoiler:her severed head]]. This causes him to go full monster, killing everyone around him, destroying Celestia, and then the devils that come to investigate the carnage. You are then [[NonstandardGameOver dumped to the game's title screen]].
* While most of the Splicer types in ''VideoGame/{{Bioshock}}'' have cracked at some point, the "Rosebud" Splicer crossed the horizon well before the game started. Her daughter was taken to be made into a Little Sister, and judging from her dialogue she's spent her life since either hallucinating that random strangers are her daughter or attacking random strangers because she thinks they ''took'' her daughter.

* After clearing Extra Mode in ''VideoGame/KirbysDreamLand'', [[BigBad King Dedede]] crashes in front of the Configuration Mode unlock screen; when Kirby walks up to him, Dedede gives up, starts crying, and sulks off on his own, not before being followed by Kirby.

* In ''[[VideoGame/AdvanceWars Advance Wars: Days Of Ruin]]'', "Captain" Waylon is unbelievable hostile toward Brenner's Wolves and Will for choosing to help people rather than looking out for themselves like he does. In fact, he seems to take more issue with them helping others than with them being the opposing force in the war he's fighting. A few of his lines of dialogue, ''particularly'' his final quote in the game, imply he was driven from just being a narcissist to [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope what he is in the game]] from the sheer, utter despair of the whole world being destroyed.
--> "I just don't get it! I just don't get people like you! The world's gone, brother! Ain't nothing out there worth fighting for! And yet here you are with your friends and your...hope! I don't get it! You oughta worry about YOU! Just like me!"

* Flint in ''VideoGame/{{Mother 3}}''. Losing his wife Hinawa drives him into a murderous revenge-fuelled rage where he lashes out at everyone and devotes to killing the creature that killed her. [[spoiler:Seeing the creature's offspring of said creature cuddle up with it as it lay dying and manages to somewhat shake free of the reprogramming that came with its UnwillingRoboticisation, not to mention losing his own son in the process, instead completely breaks him. From then on he spends the rest of his existence either visiting Hinawa's grave or searching for his son, completely neglecting his other son in the process, and it's not until pretty much the final battle that he shakes out of it and begins helping Lucas.]]

* MentalOmega: In ''Hamartia'', the final Allied Mission of Act 2, the entire Allied force [[spoiler:which at this point is their ''entire remaining army'' thanks to the loss of their final stronghold earlier]] crash headlong over this at the [[AwfulTruth realisation]] that, even with the might of the [[TimeManipulation Paradox]] [[TheBattlestar Engine]] and its [[TimeStandsStill unique ability]], they likely won't be able to defeat the [[WellIntentionedExtremist Epsilon]] Army in time to stop [[TheEvilsOfFreeWill their]] [[TakeOverTheWorld endgame]].

*** The game uses this as a ''gameplay mechanic''. Anyone hit with the Despair ailment will skip their turn and lose a chunk of SP. If not cured within two of their actions, they will succumb to the ailment and [[DeathByDespair die]] on their third action. [[spoiler:During flu season (11/13 to 11/15, then 12/8 and 12/9) random enemies in Mementos will be afflicted with this ailment, and [[BonusBoss The Reaper itself]] is no exception.]]

** From the Testaments found in the Secret Levels, it becomes clear that [[spoiler:'''God himself''']] actually crossed this Horizon a long, long time ago. If the realization [[spoiler:he couldn't unmake Hell after creating it in a fit of rage]] wasn't the cause, then [[spoiler:[[MyGodWhatHaveIDone realizing he just threw Lucifer into Hell just for questioning him on the matter]] surely was. [[spoiler:And going by the fact GodIsDead (from Gabriel's own words), it seems [[DrivenToSuicide he found no other escape but death]]]].
