I’m not sure if I’m okay with that. I mean, everybody thinks that they’ll be able to sacrifice themselves for the people they love, but nobody ever has to actually do it. And now that I’m in that situation, I’m not sure if I can. I once heard a comedian say something like, “There’s no one worth dying for, because then you’re dead, and you can’t know if it was actually worth it or not. It’s like throwing a million dollars on the sidewalk and hoping someone that works for a charity will pick it up.” The guy might be right - if David kills me, that doesn’t necessarily mean Sloane and Maddy will make it out alive. Maybe if I knew for sure that they would, I’d be willing to go through with this. But without that certainty…\\

But no. I have to prolong my life as long as possible. Every time I think of telling David to shoot me, of me getting shot, I know that I can’t do it. I have to survive. That’s my goal. Survival. I’ll do whatever I have to, kill whatever I have to, just to stay alive. Does that make me an evil person? Maybe. But it’s what I have to do. Certainly, what I’m doing is wrong, but it doesn’t matter, because I don’t have a choice, not really. The right thing to do would be to make some [[HeroicSacrifice heroic sacrifice]] and let myself get killed rather than kill people, but who would honestly do that? What person would honestly let themselves get killed? Nobody, that’s who. Only a suicidally depressed person would choose death, no matter how horrible the alternative is."

The chapters are very, very short (typically between 100 and 800 words), meaning that the author can get a lot to happen very quickly. The fic is divided into several 'books', each spanning fifty chapters exactly. The first book has now been completed, called ''The Disappearance''. The second is in progress, although it has no title.

The main characters include, in order of who narrates:
* Gav, the first narrator, who crashes his car into the barrier during the opening chapter. He's a very nice, soft guy, who gets a superpower: [[spoiler: [[BadPowersGoodPeople the ability to change the hardness of anything he touches]].]]
* Hazel, a girl who used to have [[AbusiveParents a father who molested her and a mother who beat her.]] She [[spoiler: sees her dad in her room during the middle of the night in Chapter Twenty-Eight.]] As she struggles to get over the abuse of her parents and open up to others, the author struggles to give her a personality outside of this.
* Grady, who gets shot in the arm by David early on, which gives him the TouchOfDeath.
* Maria, who was rescued by Gav early on. She has an intense hatred for David because he shot her brother, Alex.
* David, a [[TheSociopath sociopath]] who immediately takes control of Grantsville by using guns and violence as a threat. He starts to lead a pack of followers, all of whom are mainly afraid of him. [[spoiler: It turns out that, for as-of-now-unexplained reasons, he has multiple personalities: a psychopath, and a normal guy.]]
* Kaelyn, a very [[TeamMom moralistic character]] who starts a daycare after David declares his intentions to kill every child in Grantsville.
* Tobias, one of David's workers, who, unlike most of them, has very few qualms about what he does, despite not being too tough.
* Nick, who is pretty much identical to Tobias. [[spoiler: He's KilledOffForReal as of Chapter Forty-Six]].
* Will, who helps out Kaelyn to take care of the kids, and has a crush on Paige.
* Sarah, who [[FlatCharacter has no distinct personality at all]], [[CreatorBreakdown much to the author's rage.]] When she's not being boring, she's helping out Kaelyn with the daycare. She also has a superpower - she's a LivingBattery.
* Cassie, one of David's guards, [[ButtMonkey whose sole purpose in the narrative seems to be so that the author has someone to beat up.]]
* Cary, who is helping Kaelyn with the daycare. He's depressed for no reason that the author currently knows of.
* Alex, Maria's sister, who gets shot by David early on. [[spoiler: He comes BackFromTheDead with the TouchOfDeath superpower, until David [[KilledOffForReal actually kills him off.]]]]
* Paige, who helps out Kaelyn with the daycare. She is utterly {{Badass}}, and Will has a crush on her.
* Kristopher, who works for David. He's the most scared of all of them, and he gives his sisters to the daycare, while trying to hide all of this from David.
* Rollins, another one of David's workers, who is used as a hitman when [[spoiler: David's normal personality comes about.]]
* Yasuna, one of David's workers who has less qualms about her business than everyone else because she has a crush on him.
* Eve, a disabled girl who needs to get over being protected by Darla, her sister, before David decides to shoot her.
* Fisher, a nine year-old boy who wants his sister, Kaede, back.
* Marco, another daycare worker, with no distinct personality yet.
* Cady, the leader of a movement to get the kids back from David.
* Isabelle, one of the kids that wasn't rescued as part of the daycare and who David plans to kill.
* Jem, another daycare worker. [[spoiler: It turns out he was just working for David the entire time, and he has a hand in killing all the babies in the daycare.]]

!!Gone Again provides examples of:

* BerserkButton: Anything involving a threat towards Maria, for Gav. The mere implication that he may not be able to rescue her is enough to beat up Cassie and [[spoiler: discover his superpower.]]

* ButtMonkey: Cassie's sole role in the story seems to be so that different people can beat her up.

* DisabilitySuperpower: Everyone gets their superpowers after an injury of some kind, and some of the injuries can be pretty harmful. For example, Sarah gets her superpower after a baby accidentally set her on fire, Grady and [[spoiler: Alex]] get their superpowers from [[spoiler: David's gun]], and Gav gets his superpower after he crashes his car into the barrier.

* FlatCharacter: ''Sarah''. Only about a third of the characters are properly fleshed out, but the author didn't even try with her - she doesn't even have a superficial personality.

* LittleMissBadass: Subverted. Maria sneaks out to kill David, and at first, it looks like she might succeed. Turns out she has no idea what she's doing, and the only result of her attempts was [[spoiler: getting her nose broken.]]

* OhAndXDies: Inverted; in something similar to what Creator/KAApplegate did in ''Literature/{{Remnants}}'', the author has said that he'll do his best to keep Hazel alive, although he can't promise anything. He's also given tenative immortality to three other characters, and marked a bunch of characters that he ''knows'' are going to die.

* PervertedDad: Hazel has one, and it's not PlayedForLaughs, for once.

* StoppedCaring: Cary.

* TeamMom: Kaelyn.

* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: Where the hell did David get all his sociopathy from? (The author intends to answer, if he can remember.)

* WritingByTheSeatOfYourPants: [[invoked]] The author started it impulsively one day because he had finished his assignments in his creative writing class early. He has no idea what's going to happen next, no answers to any of the mysteries, and no plans at all, other than an extremely rough synopsis of who's going to make it to the end of the series and who won't. (And he's already broken that synopsis more than once, so there really are no plans.)
