* [[ProudWarriorRaceGuy Proud Soldier Race]]: The Axe-tails, for whom honor in war is supreme. Kinda subverted, however, in that they don't disdain scientists and merchants: said roles are just fine if you have no aptitude or taste for warfare. And their idea of honor isn't just warfare for its own sake, either: they're pragmatic, not {{blood knight}}s, and their preferred tactic is to strike fast, hard, and ''first'', to cause a minimum of suffering to their opponent.

* OneWorldOrder: Earth's planetary government is an outgrowth of the United Nations.

* SmallUniverseAfterAll: Played with. The UGF controls territory in two galaxies, and [[DummiedOut has colonies in the Magellanic Clouds]]. Note that this is only possible with "long-jump" hypergates that can cross the intergalactic void.

** And the star systems shown are a broad cross-section of the actual scale of Known Space, which includes Galactic colonies in the Magellanic Clouds and, just two months before the start of the game, a brief poke-your-head-in-and-see-what's-there in the Pegasus Dwarf Irregular Galaxy.

* OperatorIncompatibility: Due to their intended operators being nearly three meters tall and having two thumbs per hand (the other one being where the pinkie is on humans), Varellavite starship cockpits have to be modified for most species. Same goes for ships built for the tentacled Ta'cural'th, the spider-like Lanvar-Ozians, the base 14-using Klavarese, or any number of other species.

* MohsScaleOfScienceFictionHardness: It's harder than stock ''Nova'' (and harder than ''Franchise/StarTrek''), but still pretty soft.

* WeComeInPeaceShootToKill: Subverted with the Varellavites. Somebody ''did'' get trigger-happy at first contact with the Milky Way Union, resulting in a month-long border war, but the diplomats managed to solve the problem.
** Played straight with the Axe-tails. [[spoiler:Two of the storylines eventually subvert it with the signing of a peace treaty.]]

* WideOpenSandbox: Insanely wide. The map contains over 1,200 star systems intended to represent two galaxies, and that's ''before'' adding the duplicate systems for storyline changes. Hypergate use is effectively required to get anywhere in a reasonable amount of time.

* FantasticHonorific: Anz'kalarads use the suffix "-sava" with loved ones (e.g. "Kala-''sava''").

* TranslatorMicrobes: Galactic military personnel have translator implants that convert languages the subject is not already fluent in to Basic.

* ShoutOut: The planet Cyteen deep in the Rift is one InUniverse, to Creator/CJCherryh's ''Literature/AllianceUnion'' series.
** The Varellavite cruiser's {{reporting name|s}} "Grendel" is a reference to ''Literature/{{Beowulf}}''.
** Operation Red Clover (see BatmanGambit above) is a reference to an episode of ''Series/TheUnit''.
** ''VideoGame/StarCraft'':
*** The Axe-tails were originally going to be the [[VideoGame/StarCraft Protoss]], and retain some similarities such as a frigate that can cloak ships in formation with it, as well as a cloaking probe droid that can spot cloaked ships.
*** The Balcrusian fusion beam is based on the [[VideoGame/StarCraft Terran Battlecruiser's Yamato cannon]].
*** The unified human/Anz'kalarad/Orion government that arose out of the United Powers War in the backstory was the United Powers League (a leftover from when part of the ''VideoGame/StarCraft'' 'verse was going to be [[CrossoverFic shoehorned in]]). It didn't act anything like the ''VideoGame/StarCraft'' UPL, however.
** ''Franchise/StarWars'':
*** The UGF's staple fighter, the SF-81A Black Knight, is based on the Sith Infiltrator from ''ThePhantomMenace'' with a little TIE fighter technology thrown in for good measure.
*** The Klavarese started out as a [[StarWarsExpandedUniverse Chiss]] {{expy}}, and retain similarities.
*** The Kyrzakagalans are basically the Vagaari with the serial numbers filed off.
*** Most of the names for BPN and Scimitar ships are cribbed from Star Destroyers. Many ships flown by resistance movements are borrowed from the Rebel Alliance or New Republic.
*** The spaceport bar on Princeton Station is called "The Headquarters", and features [[VisualPun a marquee of a helmet being torn into four pieces]]. It's named for a bar with a similar marquee that appeared in ''[[XWingSeries Wedge's Gamble]]''.
** The design of the United Galactic Navy's ''O'Brien''-class battlecruiser is partly inspired by Hawk's fighter in ''BuckRogersInThe25thCentury''.
** Franchise/StargateVerse:
*** [[spoiler:The Starbuster, an ancient [[StarKilling supernova weapon]] in the Andromeda Galaxy, destroys stars by jumping part of its mass into hyperspace, disrupting the equilibrium between nuclear fusion and gravity. This the technique used when [[Series/{{StargateSG-1}} Samantha Carter]] [[RememberWhenYouBlewUpASun blew up a sun]], only they used a stargate instead. And the name is a reference to TheCorellianTrilogy.]]
*** The planet currently known as Orzanacruz used to be called Vorash when it was under Orizian control. Vorash was the planet on which the Tok'ra had their headquarters during seasons two through four of ''Series/{{Stargate SG-1}}''.
** Rift Station Mike's unofficial mascot is [[{{MASH}} Corporal Klinger]], which is pretty impressive considering ''Series/{{MASH}}'' first aired over three thousand years ago.
** ''Franchise/StarTrek'':
*** The model number of the Ganba neutron beam is NX-1, a reference to ''Series/StarTrekEnterprise''.
*** One of the random lines from Klatuan ships reads, "Your unique technologies make you brave, Galactic, but the Great Ones are on our side." The first half of the sentence is a direct quote from a Kazon on ''Series/StarTrekVoyager''.
*** One of the randomly generated names for UGN destroyers is ''Enterprise''. Just because.
** The name "[=StarSword=]" is derived from an Andalite dome ship in ''[[Literature/{{Animorphs}} The Andalite Chronicles]]''.
** The Kusanagi System is named for Motoko Kusanagi of ''Manga/GhostInTheShell''.

* BinarySuns: The Galactic capital world Luminous has an elliptical orbit around two stars that orbit the Lagrangian point between them. Appropriately enough, the system is called Twin Stars.
