** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIV'' has Alphinaud, a teenaged Elezen boy introduced at the start of ''A Realm Reborn'' that joins the player character on many quests throughout the story. Not only does he get more CharacterDevelopment than everyone else (starting as a cynic, then becoming a WideEyedIdealist, and then getting served some HumblePie before he changes from his experiences), he's practically used in the majority of cutscenes and influences many other characters that always go along with his ideas. Alphinaud is a competent mage in battle, can dish out politics with the best of them, and is basically the player character's mouthpiece since the player [[HeroicMime never actually speaks aside from some dialogue options.]] The developers clearly love Alphinaud a lot and at the end of the 4.3 story, [[spoiler: you even get to play as him for one battle.]]

* Zavok in the ''Franchise/SonicTheHedgehog'' series. When the Deadly Six were introduced in ''VideoGame/SonicLostWorld'', they quickly descended into [[TheScrappy Scrappy]] status for being bland, one-dimensional villains that don't fit the ''Sonic'' series. Despite their status, Zavok started making more appearances in later games and media including a playable character in ''[[VideoGame/MarioAndSonicAtTheOlympicGames Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games]]'', a boss fight in ''VideoGame/SonicForces'' (when the more popular antagonists Shadow and Chaos didn't get one), and even an appearance as one of [[VideoGame/MegaManX Sigma]]'s minions in ''[[ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogMegaManWorldsUnite Worlds Unite]]'', with nothing being done to improve his character. * ''VideoGame/{{Overwatch}}'' has a few:
** Game designer Jeff Kaplan has stated several times that he's a huge fan of Hanzo (whom is nearly-universally scorned by the community for attracting low-skill players to a high-skill hero), although this is quite possibly a joke in response to the community's outrage towards the character.
** Tracer, being the game's mascot, is often accused of having preferential treatment: she's, so far, gotten two animated shorts starring her (only Wintson and Widowmaker have gotten as much screentime), two comics (the event comics for Winter Wonderland and Uprising both focused on her - the only other characters to have gotten two comics are Ana and Torbjorn, and maybe Soldier: 76), and the most Legendary event skins of any other character in the game (one for the game's special Origins edition, two for the Summer Games, one for Winter Wonderland, one for Lunar New Year, one for Uprising, and one for the Anniversary Event). She's not as univerally spurned as, say, the aforementioned Hanzo, but the fact that she's received so much attention while other characters like Lucio, D.Va, and Zarya are relatively sidelined is seen as unfair to a good number of fans.

From the beginning when he became available to play, Scorpion was (initially) [[GameBreaker hideously overpowered]] thanks to his TeleportSpam abilities that makes him more powerful than all of the characters, including DC's mascots Superman and Batman. Players who purchased the season pass were especially angry that they were misled into purchasing 3 DC fighters and a ''Mortal Kombat'' character instead of 4 DC fighters. Even after getting nerfed and getting featured less in the marketing campaign, he's still hated by many fans for his very presence.

** Taimi has become this over the course of the living story. There is nothing she can't deduce with her superior intellect, no problem she can't solve by building a magical machine, and even though she is still just a child, the plot is frequently driven by the player character (and ostensible group leader) running around following the instructions she broadcasts. The only characters who ever seriously whether Taimi should be in that role are portrayed as unequivocally wrong and likely corrupt. Fan reaction to her has become increasingly negative, but the writers still can't seem to get enough of her and she is worked into any possible plotline.

It got to the point where Namco was legitimately surprised that Patroklos ranked 37 in a popularity poll. However, they seem to be wising up in recent years by delivering a few [[TakeThatScrappy shots at his expense]].
