After graduating from RADA in 1928 she spent ten years in repertory theatre, before moving to radio and TV. She appeared in many comedy series, with several appearances in ''Series/TheBennyHillShow'', ''Series/HancocksHalfHour'' and ''Series/TillDeathUsDoPart''. In 1971, she won a UsefulNotes/{{BAFTA}} after playing Edna in ''Play for Today''.

She was no stranger to the big screen either, with her most substantial roles coming in ''The Bargee'', ''Film/TheNeverEndingStory'', ''Film/{{Willow}}'' and ''Film/AFishCalledWanda''.
