* ActionFilmQuietDramaScene: Most of his action cartoons are very light on dialogue, to the point that ''WesternAnimation/SamuraiJack'' had several episodes with [[NoDialogueEpisode none at all]]. Creator/PhilLaMaar famously joked that playing Jack was "the easiest job ever."

* ArtEvolution: He admits that he has never been a particularly good draftsman, often falling back on his timing and technical abilities to make up for his drawing abilities. In fact, he's said that he couldn't even draw a circle when he first learned how to draw. However, 20+ years in the industry have clearly helped as his drawing and design style solidified, allowing him to do much bolder art.

* TechnicianVersusPerformer: The technician to Creator/CraigMcCracken's performer: Craig was a stronger draftsman while Genndy handled timing.

These days, he has moved on to Sony Pictures Animation, where he directed ''WesternAnimation/HotelTransylvania'' to both financial and critical acclaim. After directing its sequel, he was pegged to do an All-CGI Cartoon ''ComicStrip/{{Popeye}}'' feature, returning to his roots, but the film has since entered DevelopmentHell, putting his next project, an original story called ''Can You Imagine?,'' next in the roster. His latest works will be a new season of ''Samurai Jack,'' being produced by Cartoon Network Studios for Creator/AdultSwim's Creator/{{Toonami}} block with Tartakovsky back in the directing chair, and ''Cage'', a 4-issue Creator/MarvelComics miniseries starring [[ComicBook/LukeCageHeroForHire Luke Cage]] that acts as a throwback to the character's blaxploitation roots.

After four years of ''Jack,'' Genndy started putting together his own independent studio, an effort which, in retrospect, was horribly timed, coinciding with both the economic crash in 2008 and [[DeaderThanDisco the downfall of traditional animation]] in America. In the end, the studio produced one project, a single season of ''WesternAnimation/SymBionicTitan'' for Cartoon Network.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Tartakovsky had two chances to get into directing films, none of which came to be. First being a sequel to ''Film/TheDarkCrystal,'' which ended up in development hell. Second being a film of ''Manga/AstroBoy,'' which later ended up being finished in another studio unrelated to him, and did so poorly that it closed them down.
** Sadly, it seems that the Popeye feature he was working on at Sony has been [[http://www.cartoonbrew.com/feature-film/sony-killed-genndy-tartakovskys-popeye-110356.html canned.]]
** Before his studio fell apart, they were developing a movie about vikings (before ''WesternAnimation/HowToTrainYourDragon'' no less). They were even invited to create a silent film about dinosaurs, which eventually became ''WesternAnimation/WalkingWithDinosaurs,'' as Creator/IlluminationEntertainment's first feature.
