He began his career as a variety performer in TheFifties, but didn't start acting until 1971 in the TV play ''Paper Roses''. From 1976 to 1978, he played the titular character in the sitcom ''Oh No It's Selwyn Froggitt''.

In TheSeventies, he was a frequent face in British films, notably appearing in five ''Film/CarryOn'' films (he also appeared in a sixth, but was cut for time) and starred as Creator/RobinAskwith's father in the ''Film/ConfessionsOfASeries''.

In TheNineties, he took a starring role in ''Heartbeat'' as Claude Jeremiah Greengrass until 2000, when a series of strokes forced him to retire.

Bill Maynard, born Walter Frederick George Williams, (8 October 1928 -- 30 March 2018), was a British actor best known for starring in ''Oh No It's Selwyn Froggitt'' and ''Series/{{Heartbeat}}''.
