While glad to see his friend had survived, Curtis was not happy with that development.being put through the emotional wringer by screw-ups.

* PerpetualPoverty: The Wilkins (mainly Greg) constantly complain about scraping by to make ends meet on Greg's salary (Diane appears to be a stay-at-home mom). Yet, they never seen to be short on food (See BigEater) and the boys always seem to have electronic gizmos current enough to keep them happy.

* AmbitionIsEvil: Michelle's pride in her achievements in modeling and acting is seen as prideful and "stuck-up" by the other regular characters (minus Curtis, of course).

* CameraObscurer: A running gag involving Curtis' barber, who claims to have met someone famous. When asked to show proof, he will inevitably produce a photograph of himself with his arm around the celebrity... except that the "celebrity" will be obscured by a finger.

** There was also a sequence where Curtis went through a door and found himself back in time on the day that Martin Luther King was assassinated.

* AccidentalMisnaming: Gunther the barber can never seem to get Curtis' name right.

* TheBarber: Curtis gets advice from one. The barber [[MyNameIsNotDurwood never seems to be able to remember his name]], however.

** Curtis playing rap at full blast with his dad, Greg, screaming, "Curtis, turn that rap junk down!" Inverted in one strip where Greg and Diane play 1970's songs from when they were younger.

** Curtis playing rap at full blast with his dad, Greg, screaming, "Curtis, turn that rap junk down!" Inverted in one strip where Greg and Diane play 1970's songs from when they were younger. This has become problematic in recent years, as Greg and Diane act clueless about 80s and 90s music that now would have been what they were exposed to growing up, while Curtis uses slang and enjoys entertainment of a sort twenty years or so out of date.

* BizarroEpisode: Every year for Kwanzaa, the strip runs a two-week-long StoryArc that involves new, made-up characters doing absolutely ridiculous things that resemble African folktales, with little concern for anything other than being awesomely over-the-top, often toeing the line between RuleOfCool and an outright MindScrew. Past arcs have included [[http://joshreads.com/images/07/01/i070102curtis.jpg a golden, telepathic otter and a magic sandal]] and [[http://joshreads.com/images/0601/i060109curtis.jpg bat-winged bears]], among others. Consensus among fans (or at least among TheComicsCurmudgeon and his followers) is that these are among his best works; he even considers the otter "still the gold standard."
** They actully ''do'' tie it into the strip, but always in the same way: It always turns out to be [[spoiler:a book Curtis was reading.]]

Added DiffLines:

* TooDumbToLive: Most of Curtis's problems in life stem from the fact that he is too blasted stupid to follow the rules or pick up on the fact that his behaviour irritates people around him.

don\'t use This Troper

** This troper remembered the "mugging/miscarriage" story differently. Mom & Barry get mugged but she fought back, kicking one of the muggers in the groin when she was on the ground. This brief, would-be CrowningMomentOfAwesome is defused by the miscarriage (caused by all the scuffle, falling & stress on her body). She may have been punched in the gut in the process but it was so long ago that this troper doesn't remember.

** We seem to have seen the last of these; what happened is that Barry finally told Diane what Curtis was doing and, well, [[DisproportionateRetribution she spanked him for]], I don't know, not respecting his elders or insulting God or something that June Cleaver would have handled by a DopeSlap and a comment about not making fun.

It is implied in one panel that [[spoiler: it's a sex tape.]] However, it turns out that it's [[spoiler: an old episode of SoulTrain that their parents appeared on, which also serves as the "how they met" story for Diane and Greg.]] After watching the tape, Curtis and Barry have a newfound respect for their parents, i.e. that their parents actually did something "cool" in their eyes.
