Shang-Chi's earlier solo series had always used titles such as ''Master of Kung Fu'' rather than simply his name. This series is a very direct SequelSeries to that limited series, though - to the point where some collected editions treat them as the same thing, with the limited series collected as "volume 1".

** Played straight when he paralyzes ComicBook/TheThing's arm with a pressure point strike, although Shang-Chi and his siblings are no match for the complete ComicBook/FantasticFour.

* RememberTheNewGuy: Jiang Li is a CanonImmigrant from the ''Film/ShangChiAndTheLegendOfTheTenRings'' film. Prior to this series, there was no mention of her as Shang-Chi's mother. Justified in-universe via Zheng Zu apparently applying LaserGuidedAmnesia to his son Shang-Chi.
* RetCanon: The Ten Rings introduced in ''Film/ShangChiAndTheLegendOfTheTenRings'' become part of the comic canon, [[spoiler:with Zheng Zu's explanation that they are one of Ta Lo's "Five Sets of Heavenly Weapons", a legend that inspired the structure of the Five Weapons Society]]. Shang-Chi being the son of an Asian woman, rather than a Caucasian as in the original comics, Shang-Chi's mother is a mortal of Ta Lo who met his father after he invaded Ta Lo, they got married and went live on Earth.

''Shang-Chi'' (2021) is a comic book series published by Creator/MarvelComics, starring the titular ComicBook/ShangChi. Written by Creator/GeneLuenYang and initially illustrated by Dike Ruan, it’s a sequel to the [[ComicBook/ShangChi2020 2020 ''Shang-Chi'' limited series]] by the same creators, expanding on the SoftReboot that began with that series.

The first issue was released on 19 May 2021. The final issue, #12, was released on 11 May 2022 and ''Shang-Chi'' was replaced by a SequelSeries from the same creative team, ''ComicBook/ShangChiAndTheTenRings''.

* RealityWarper: The Cosmic Cube, as always. [[spoiler:Shang-Chi realizes that Takeshi's magic sword is actually the Cube when he makes Mjolnir melt with it.]]

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: As of Feb 2022, there’s been no reference to Shang-Chi's half-sisters Zheng Bao Yu (formerly known as Fah lo Suee) and Kwai Far (who only appeared in a single Black Panther story).

* GlowingRedEyesOfDoom: [[spoiler:Shang-Chi's eyes start glowing red, echoing Takeshi's vision of doom, when he embraces the power of the full set of Ten Rings and prepares to take vengeance on Chieftain Xin. Shi-Hua and his other siblings talk him down, and his eyes return to normal]].

** Poor Red Dot can't catch a break with his eyes getting repeatedly injured. His cybernetic eye gets repeatedly damaged by Shang-Chi and Sister Dagger and to add insult to injury Shang-Chi throws habanero salsa into his human eye right after repairing his robotic one.

* RunningGag: Esme continually calls Spider-Man "Snot-Shooter". It bothers him enough to ask for second opinions about whether or not his webbing actually does feel like snot.

** When Shang-Chi discovers his half-sister Zheng Zhilian he clashes with ComicBook/{{Wolverine}}, who’s tracked her down to offer her a [[ComicBook/XMenTheKrakoanAge home in the new mutant nation of Krakoa]].

* DeathFakedForYou: Years ago Takeshi was ordered to assassinate his half-sister Zheng Zhilian. He opted to lie to his father and fake her death instead.

** His half-sister, Zheng Zhilian, who is a mutant.

* MagicMusic: Zheng Zhilian, the Witch of Muckross Lake, is trained in mysticism and seems to have this power. But it’s then revealed that she’s a mutant with the power to solidify music into constructs.

* StockNessMonster: Muckie, the monster rumoured to dwell in Ireland's Lakes of Killarney (Muckie's not as well known as the Loch Ness monster, but this is an actual legend, not something invented for the series). Zheng Zhilian's been using her powers to stop it from menacing the locals.
