* AsianAndNerdy: Tai is a Vietnamese-American kid who's a fan of comic books and video games, citing them as inspiration for his light constructs as a Green Lantern. But he subverts the BrainyBrunette part of the stereotype by being thoroughly BookDumb, much to his friend Serena's frustration.

* AudienceSurrogate: Since the Green Lantern Corps aren't FamedInStory on Earth yet and Tai is a NaiveNewcomer (not unlike the story being a GatewaySeries for new comic readers), he has to be filled in on things such as what the Green Lantern Ring can do and who Sinestro is.

* BookDumb: Tai struggles in school, referring to the Pythagorean theorem as "the Python's Korean", much to [[BrainyBrunette Serena's]] disbelief. His TripleShifter work as a superhero and member of the Green Lantern Corps doesn't help, dozing off in class repeatedly as he spends his nights training and stopping rampant arson attacks even with the help of Kid Flash.

From there, Tai's mastery of his power ring grows by leaps and bounds.

By targeting some of his own properties, Xander also threw the Lanterns off his trail for a time.]]

* NotMeThisTime: In ''Alliance'', Coast City is hit with a rash of arson attacks by a mysterious group called Scorched Earth. Tai suspects [[spoiler:Xander Griffin]], the BigBad of the previous book. But said villain insists that it's not him this time and actually helps Tai save people from the burning buildings. [[spoiler:Subverted when Scorched Earth is revealed to be a FalseFlagOperation on Xander's payroll, as he'd planned to use the attacks to gain sympathy and fuel his plans to become mayor of Coast City.]]

* ThreeAmigos: Tai, Tommy, and Serena are best friends who hang out constantly. Tai is TheHero as the newest cadet of the Green Lantern Corps, Tommy is his comedic and wise-cracking friend, and Serena is the BrainyBrunette female friend.

* TeensAreShort: Tai, Serena, and Tommy are all thirteen years old but not especially tall for their age. John Stewart is ExpectingSomeoneTaller when he learns who inherited Kim's ring and initially thinks that Tai is six or seven years old.

* DoNotCallMeSir: Xander introduces himself by telling Tai to just call him Xander rather than with a FullNameBasis or "Mr. Girffin".

* DominoMask: Like his grandmother before him, Tai hides his SecretIdentity with a green mask with an EyelessVisor that covers his eyes and nose.

* TheCameo: Tommy and his partner choose to research [[ComicBook/{{Batman}} Bruce Wayne]] for their class project.

* CuttingTheKnot: While flying through an asteroid field obstacle course created by Kilowog, Tai gets frustrated when Kilowog starts manipulating the asteroids to crash into him. Instead of flying through the gaps as planned, he creates a HumongousMecha to blast the field to smithereens. This just earns him a fat F grade, as he failed to adhere to the actual goal of the exercise: sticking to the one rule he was ggiven.

* RankUp: Near the end of the first book, Tai is promoted from a cadet to a fully-fledged Green Lantern for foiling the [[spoiler:Sinestro Corps' attempt to take control of Coast City via Xander's company, Tression.]]

* BookEnds: Near the start of the story, an older couple at Kim's funeral recall how she came to their home with rice and other items from Vietnam to help them settle in. At the end of the story, Tai, his friends, and John deliver groceries to the home of the Middle Eastern kid they met earlier to help them feel more welcome.

* MundaneUtility: Tai first uses his Power Ring to discreetly trip a bully by making a rock appear where the bully was about to step.
