Rated M For Manly is about a work that is heavily dependent on things, situations, or actions that are stereotypically masculine, in order to appeal to a predominantly male audience. Deleting misuse.

!!Noboru Gongenzaka
!!!'''Archetype''': Superheavy Samurai
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/noboru_gongenzaka.jpg]]

A practitioner of the "Steadfast" Dueling style, Gongenzaka isn't a student of You Show Duel School but is a close friend to Yuya Sakaki and Yuzu Hiiragi, having been a childhood friend to them both.
----
* {{Acrofatic}}: Subverted. He's not so much fat as he is muscular.
* DemotedToExtra: He was a prominent supporting character in canon, but like most characters in the Standard Dimension, he has fewer scenes in the fic due to the focus being mostly on Yuzu and Yuya's relationship, Yugi and his friends, and Pegasus' alliance with Reiji. Even his duel against Yaiba in the "LDS vs You Show" event is skipped over, along with it ending in a DRAW like in canon.
* {{Foil}}: To Joey Wheeler. Both of them serve as a protective BigBrotherMentor to Yuya Sasaki and are capable physical fighters. Whereas Gongenzaka is a martial artist whose deck is filled with only Warrior monster cards and has a good relationship with his father, Joey is a street fighter whose deck is implied to be more balanced (along with a Dragon monster being his ace) and have a bad relationship with his father. Their dynamic with Yuya is also a bit different; Gongenzaka is a ChildhoodFriend compared to Joey's meeting with Yuya in their teens, but the latter has more of an impact on Yuya's growth as a Duelist due to them having troubled relationships with their own fathers.
* GentleGiant: He's beefy and easily one of the tallest among Yuya's friends, and he's one of the nicest guys around, assuming you don't hurt his friends.
* LastNameBasis: He's mainly called and referred to by his last name.
* LargeHam: He most certainly is, considering his quirk of referring to himself as "the man, Gongenzaka."
* RatedMForManly: There's a reason why he calls himself "the man, Gongenzaka."
* ThirdPersonPerson: He refers to himself in this manner, though he also adds "the man" or "the manly" in front of his name when he does so.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: He looks like a young adult, but is actually the same age as Yuya and Yuzu.

----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: To Atem.
* AdaptationalBadass: Due to Vampires having more support after her debut, she can use Xyz Summoning.
* DarkIsEvil: Uses the Dark Attribute Vampire deck and while not evil, she doesn't know how to accept that Atem will never be her boyfriend.
* HopelessSuitor: Even if she did win the duel against Yugi, Atem wouldn't waste any time in breaking up with her.
* NearVillainVictory: She got Yugi down to ''100'' lifepoints (albeit it only got that low because she drained it to 900 and then he played Brain Control -- which takes 800 lifepoints away) and the only thing that saved Yugi was Kuriboh.
* NightOfTheLivingMooks: Plays a rather powerful undead deck, focusing on [[OurVampiresAreDifferent Vampire Monsters]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Gen Ankokuji]]
!!Gen Ankokuji
!!!'''Archetype''': Battleguard
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gen_ankokuji.png]]

One of the many bullies to Yuya Sakaki. He's an arrogant Duelist who was a former student of Gongenzaka Dojo and a big fan of Strong Ishijima.
----

* BarbaricBully:
** Tries to physically assault Yuya over a very flimsy reason, and even brought a few goons with him as back-up. Thankfully, both Serena and Sora were passing by.
** This is also reflected in his deck as he uses Battleguards, which are actually called "Barbarians" in the OCG.
* DirtyCoward: He can rival the Obelisk Blue students in regards to this. He's all big and bad when confronting a single "weak-looking" opponent with superior numbers, but when things go south, he'll run away while throwing an insult at best and actually screaming in fear at worse. Which makes him calling Yuya a coward all the more ironic.
* {{Fanboy}}: Of Strong Ishijima. But his own cruelty, pragmatism, and cowardly behavior would disgrace everything his Idol believed in and stood for.
* {{Hypocrite}}:
** He loves calling and deriding Yuya as a DirtyCoward, yet both times in his confrontations with the latter and Yuto respectively, he always has three other goons backing him up, and when he loses despite having the advantage of numbers, he'll turn tail and run.
** He calls Yuya out for being a cheater in his exhibition duel against Strong Ishijima but has no problems with unfairly ganging up on others, whether in a duel or in a fight.
* {{Irony}}: He looks up to and respects Strong Ishijima, but his own beliefs and cowardice make him the very thing that would disgrace what his idol [[HonorBeforeReason stood for]].
* JerkassVictim:
** No one sheds any sympathy when he and his goons get their asses handed to them by Serena and Sora when they tried to assault Yuya.
** This goes double when he later mistakes Yuto for Yuya, and he and his goons high-tailed in fear after getting a brutal [[OneHitKill One-Turn Kill]] off-screen and a taste of the latter's power.

!!You Show Duel School
Yusho Sakaki's duel school where the main focus is to entertain the audience. When Yusho Sakaki vanished, it fell into a decline until a group of duelists decided to spruce it up and bring in revenue again.

[[folder:Yugi Muto]]
!!Yugi Muto
!!!'''Archetype''': Illusion
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/muto_yugi.jpg]]

A prominent duelist who helps out at the You Show Duel School. He uses an Illusion deck, which are monsters based on him and his friends but with classes out of an RPG.
----
* AdaptationalBadass: Didn't become a true duelist until Season 5 of his original series. Here he's capable of dueling on his own with Xyz monsters and has beaten his boyfriend [[TheAce Atem]], ''several times'' in the past, and know this, Atem is regarded as the KingOfGames and ''the only Duelist to beat'' '''Reiji''' ''of all people''!
* AdaptationalSexuality: Compare to his straight canon counterpart, who had feelings for his ChildhoodFriend Téa, this version is in a same-sex relationship with Atem.
* BadassAdorable: Small, sweet, with big innocent amethyst eyes...and capable of defeating you in a duel while down to 100 life points with a deck that basically has his friends emulate ''Final Fantasy'' Jobs.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Adorable and kind he may be, but he's not a pushover as proven in his duel against Tilla Mook.
* CovertPervert: Had an ImagineSpot of Atem as a vampire, causing him to turn red and steam to release out of his ears.
* DemotedToExtra: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. He was the main protagonist of the original series, but is a HeroOfAnotherStory in the fic.
* IdenticalStranger: Champion of Illusion is specifically molded after him.
* MythologyGag: His Illusion monsters are based on him and his friends (and Priest Seto even though Kaiba is AdaptedOut) in some way. For example, Ryou notes that he wished his Illusion monster counterpart (Bard of Illusion) was a White Mage, which was his ''Monster World'' character in the origianl manga.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: He's defeated his boyfriend -- who's ''defeated Reiji'' -- multiple times.
* StraightGay: He's in a relationship with Atem.
* YinYangBomb: His Illusion monsters can shift their attributes from Light to Dark at a whim. His Xyz monsters gain special abilities depending on the number of Light and Dark monsters on the field.

[[folder:Atem]]
!!Atem
!!!'''Archetype''': Dark Magician
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/atem.jpg]]

The younger brother of Mahad and older twin brother of Mana, and the middle sibling of the trio. He's one of the best duelists in the You Show Duel School and the current KingOfGames in Miami City.
----
* TheAce: He's regarded as the KingOfGames in Miami City, and was the only one who was able to defeat ''Reiji Akaba'' of all people off-screen.
* AdaptationalSexuality: Compare to his CelibateHero status from canon, this version is in a same-sex relationship with Yugi Muto.
* CastingAShadow: Is capable of shadow magic, as Yuya and Yuzu note.
* ChickMagnet: He's ''very'' handsome, and has gotten the attention of many girls his age...much to his annoyance.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Dark and imposing with crimson eyes, but he's a kind person at heart.
* LateArrivalSpoiler: Atem is the true name of Yami Yugi which he learns near the end of the original series. Here it's laid out right in the open for everyone.
* NotAMorningPerson: Hates waking up in the morning, especially if it's his sister doing so.
* OfficialCouple: With Yugi.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: He was the only Duelist to defeat Reiji Akaba in a duel.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: He, Mahad, and Mana are all siblings in the fic.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: He has crimson eyes like his Toei counterpart, and is the KingOfGames.
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue oni to his twin sister's red.
* SiblingYinYang: He and Mana couldn't have been more different than night and day. When Sora asked if Atem is anything like Mana, ''everyone'' around him laughs at such a comparison.
* StraightGay: He's in a relationship with Yugi.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Mana]]
!!Mana
!!!'''Archetype''': Magician Girl
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mana_9.jpg]]

The younger sister of Mahad and the younger twin sister of Atem, and the youngest sibling of the trio. She's one of the best duelists in the You Show Duel School.\\\
Mana plays a "Magician Girl" deck, with her playstyle focusing on letting her opponents attack her "magician girls" to trigger their effects and land a devastating comeback.
----
* TheAce: Is a strong enough Duelist who could rival her twin brother.
* AmazonBrigade: Mainly uses the Magician Girls archetype but she also keeps a copy of Dark Magician [[spoiler:and Quintet Magician]].
* AttentionWhore: Mana does love the spotlight, in contrast to her twin brother.
* BadassAdorable: She's adorable and she can kick your ass without breaking a sweat.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Yes she may be a GenkiGirl with a love of Kuribohs and also a hugger...but she's still a strong duelist with a powerful beatdown deck and is SmarterThanTheyLook.
* BlackMagicianGirl: You're looking at the (somewhat) TropeNamer here as not only is her deck the "Magician Girl" archetype, one of her monsters is Dark Magician Girl but it's implied that she ''herself'' has magical abilities.
* BloodKnight: She loves a good duel and has gotten bored with the people she fights. That is, until her loss to Serena and even then she's so happy to find a challenge.
* CutenessProximity: '''Loves''' Kuribohs and wins Serena over by introducing her to them. She then becomes enamored with Serena's Lunalights and Sora's Fluffals.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Most of her monsters are of the Dark attribute but she's a happy ball of sunshine.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Loses to Serena but is delighted to find a WorthyOpponent.
* DudeMagnet: She's very beautiful, and has gotten the attention of many boys her age.
* GenkiGirl: Is very, ''very'' hyperactive.
* GirlyBruiser: To the extent of where Sora wonders how someone would be this powerful as a Duelist, along with an attitude that is so [[GenkiGirl goofy and girly]].
* TheGlomp: She loves hugging others. She even tells Serena and Sora that "she's a hugger" before she embraces them.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Despite her kind and girly personality, she's far from weak or unintelligent.
* GracefulLoser: She takes her loss against Serena with stride, as the latter was the first Duelist who really challenges her.
* IdenticalStranger: Her Dark Magician Girl and Apprentice Illusion Magician look exactly like her which many people lampshade.
* NightmareFuel: An InUniverse example, as her use of both Fusion and Xyz monsters against Serena, causes this reaction from Sora, who was indoctrinated with a FantasticRacism against Xyz Duelists.
* OlympusMons: [[spoiler:Quintet Magician]] which she uses against Serena.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: She, Mahad, and Atem are all siblings in the fic.
* SiblingYinYang: She and Atem couldn't have been more different than day and night. When Sora asked if Atem is anything like Mana, everyone around him laughs at such a comparison.
* WorthyOpponent: To Serena, as she was the first Duelist who had fully challenged her ''and'' defeat her.

[[folder:Joey Wheeler]]
!!Joey Wheeler
!!!'''Archetype''': Red-Eyes
[[quoteright:270:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/joey_wheeler_3.jpg]]

A street duelist who had saved Yuya after he was being picked on for his father's disappearance. For this, Yoko has allowed Joey to bunk at the Sakaki residence and he becomes Yuya's older brother.
----
* [[AbusiveParent Abusive Dad]]: His own father is implied to be this, just like his canon counterpart.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: In the original manga, he started off as TheBully to Yugi before later becoming his close friend when the latter sticks up for him and Tristan against [[StarterVillain Ushio]]. Here, Joey was already a BullyHunter in his backstory, and his first meeting with Yuya involves protecting the latter.
* BigBrotherMentor: To Yuya, helping him move on from seeing his father just vanish one day.
* BigDamnHeroes: He saves Yuya in their first meeting from bullies who want to harm him due to Yusho's disappearance.
* CompositeCharacter: He shares Gongenzaka's status of being Yuya's protector during the three years of stigma from Yusho's disappearance, along with being something of an older sibling to the latter like how he was with Yugi in the original manga.
* DaddyIssues: Considering who his father was in the canon manga, it makes sense. In fact, this is what allowed Joey to be able to relate to and help with Yuya's own ParentalAbandonment issues with Yusho.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Joey has this like his canon manga counterpart; separated from his sister due to their parent's divorce, being raised by an abusive, AlcoholicParent, and HadToBeSharp in order to fend for himself on the streets till his first meeting with Yuya.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Uses the Red-Eyes archetype, but has a good heart.
* DubNameChange: Goes by "Joey Wheeler" instead of his original Japanese name, ''Katsuya Jonouchi''.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: This version takes it further by having him defend Yuya despite not knowing the latter at first, and act as a surrogate big brother to him.
* NoPlaceForMeThere: He's currently living with Yuya at the start of the fic, as his own troubled relationship with his father didn't really give Joey a place called home.

!!Industrial Illusions
An entertainment company run by Maximillion Pegasus that specializes in creating the Duel Monster Cards and Archetypes.

[[folder:Maximillion Pegasus]]
!!Maximillion Pegasus
!!!'''Archetype''': Toons
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/maximillion_pegasus.png]]

The uncle of Mahad, Atem, Mana, and the current President and CEO of Industrial Illusions.
----
* AbledInTheAdaptation: Considering that he never gained the Millennium Eye in the fic, Pegasus still has both his eyes.
* AdaptationalHeroism: Since Cecelia is still alive, he never fell into a depression, nor did he gain the Millennium Eye, meaning he's more like his Post Season 1 self.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Make no mistake that Pegasus is eccentric but he's also a very smart and successful CEO and is quick to help Yuya make a business deal that actually benefits the boy.
* CoolUncle: To his nephews and niece, as seen in chapter 4.
* DubNameChange: He's known by his dub name instead of his original Japanese name, ''Pegasus J. Crawford''.
* HappilyMarried: To his wife, Cecelia.
* {{Manchild}}: A given. When he meets with the limo driver he states that the in-flight entertainment bored him...and quickly gets excited when he learns there's a copy of ''Yotsuba'' in the limo.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: He's the adopted uncle of Mahad, Atem, and Mana in the fic.
* StealingTheCredit: A rare ''positive'' example. Knowing that Yuya would be called a cheater for creating an entirely new summoning mechanic, Pegasus offers the boy to take credit for inventing Pendulum Summoning and saying that Yuya was testing it while giving Yuya and his mother a share of the profits.
[[/folder]]

!!Leo Corporation
A company founded by Leo Akaba that specializes in Duel Monsters and Duel Disk as well as creating various Duel Schools known as Leo Duel School. After Leo disappeared and abandoned his family his son Reiji took over and became the new CEO.

[[folder:Reiji Akaba]]
!!Reiji Akaba
!!!'''Archetype''': D/D, D/D/D
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reiji_akaba.png]]

A prominent duelist and a CEO of Leo Corporation. He has a sour grudge towards his father Leo Akaba for abandoning him and his family and aims to defeat his father and Academia in order to stop his evil ambition.\\\
He's calm, calculating, and somewhat manipulative, but he still has a softer side. Reiji quickly develops an interest in Yuya's Pendulum Summoning, along with collaborating with Pegasus in order to build up The Lancers (Lance Defense Force).\\\
Reiji uses a D/D deck, based around abusing the "Dark Contract" cards and Pendulum Monsters to loop through summons and quickly bring out powerful monsters, such as the D/D/D Extra Deck monsters. He's also one of the few characters to utilize all three Extra Deck monster types (Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz).
----
* AdaptationOriginConnection: He was born in the Original Dimension and had existed as an infant ''before'' the fracturing to where he grew up in the Standard Dimension, and thus making him Ray's full-blooded sibling.
* AdaptationRelationshipOverhaul: He's on much better terms with Yuya compare to the latter's hostility for his shady and morally questionable acts in the canon anime.
* AdaptationalBadass: Unlike his first canonical duel with Yuya, Reiji only used ''two'' Dark Contract Continuous Spell Cards and only one ''Action Card'' throughout their entire exhibition duel in the fic. [[{{Justified|Trope}} as he seems to take the Resistance Trio's words about the problems that arise from Action Duels from the previous chapter into consideration]].
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: Many of his D/D/D Extra Deck Monsters that would later make an appearance in the anime shows up in his first Duel against Yuya.
* AdaptationalHeroism: While Reiji is no less capable of committing as many morally questionable acts to achieve his goals as his canon counterpart, his early AmbiguouslyEvil acts of "acquiring" Yuya's Pendulum cards are AdaptedOut thanks to Pegasus invoked StealingTheCredit for the creation of the Pendulum Summoning mechanic, with Yuya and his mother's consent, of course, to prevent the boy from getting accused of cheating in his duel against Strong Ishijima.
* AdaptationalIntelligence: In the anime, Reiji was a capable [[TheChessmaster strategist]], businessman, planner, negotiator, and Duelist despite his young age. However, he had the FatalFlaw of being shortsighted due to a certain lack of experience, which even his father commented on. Here, with the help of others, Reiji manages to curb some of that lack of foresight thanks to their own knowledge and experience of the Interdimensional War.
** Reiji's plans for creating the Lancers are more thought-out as he intends to have another group of them bring aid to the Xyz Dimension, as explained to Pegasus. He also started to revised a lot of his initial plans after seeing recordings of the Xyz Dimension being invaded provided by the Resistence Trio.
** There's also his plan to use the Action Duels to their advantage against the invading forces, leading to the Shun, Ruri, and Yuto pointing out how the Action Cards can lead to being a crutch for the Standard Dimension Duelists, neverminded the fact that the opposing dimensional forces could easily circumvent the situation to their advantage. This made Reiji rethink the use of Action Duels in his duel against Yuya in chapter 23, as he only used ''one'' Action Card throughout their entire duel.
* AgentMulder: Reiji is more open-minded about the supernatural and unknown this time around, believing that some other force is what was responsible for Yuya's Pendulum cards.
* AnnoyingYoungerSibling: {{Subverted|Trope}}. Ray somewhat saw him as this back in the Original Dimension due to Leo trying to keep her "grounded" by having her babysit him. However, Ray knows that it isn't Reiji's fault, as he's only an infant and is just being used by their father to control her, and is shown to love him regardless.
* BigBrotherWorship: {{Justified|Trope}} as he was only an infant at the time. But the infant Reiji shows to be a very CheerfulChild towards his older sister Ray and does display this behavior towards Zarc as well. Even in the present time where he doesn't remember Ray, he still shows shades of this when learning of her existence through "Serena", as it made him go through a NotSoStoic moment.
* BigGood: While Ray and Zarc are "arguably" this despite their villainous status, Reiji still counts as this for the Standard Dimension despite his limited screen-time, since he's actively trying to undermine his father's agendas.
* DarkIsNotEvil: In spite of his DARK Fiend-Type deck, Reiji is a polite and reasonable person. He does however have some more morally ambiguous qualities and is definitely a WellIntentionedExtremist.
* DealWithTheDevil: His deck's playstyle relies on making these for PowerAtAPrice, and with the fic using the real-life format of 8000 LP, he can take a certain amount of risks before the cost becomes too overwhelming.
* DemotedToExtra: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. In the canon anime, he was Yuya's main rival and the BigGood of the series but is ultimately the [[{{Deuteragonist}} Tritagonist]] to the former and Yuzu. Here, he gets less screen-time whenever the story focuses on the Standard Dimension, as the narrative mainly focuses on the growing relationship between Yuzu and Yuya, along with their interactions with others.
* EquivalentExchange: The various "Dark Contract" Continuous Spell Cards involve him having to take 1000 pts of damage for each of his Standby Phase, meaning that if his opponent can stall the duel long enough, Reiji would eventually lose unless he can counteract the drawbacks. But in turn, the "Dark Contract" cards allow him to gain the necessary materials from his deck to his hand and have good effects that can swarm the field and summon out his powerful Extra Deck Monsters. Plus, he also has good recovery effects from the "Dark Contract", D/D, and D/D/D cards in case his monsters are in the GY. To quote his canon counterpart's words: ''High risks, high rewards''.
* {{Expy}}: Of Seto Kaiba.
* FasterThanYouLook: Don't let his appearance and privileged upbringing fool you, he's incredibly athletic and quick to react as every Action Duelist is required to be.
* NotSoStoic: Despite being presented as a calm and collected person, he has his moments.
** When in the proximity of watching Yuzu and Yuya interact with each other intimately, the narration shows that he's quite visibly awkward by the display of affection as he's not really used to the experience for his FriendlessBackground and emotionally cold upbringing.
** After Ray, under the guise of Serena, gives him a very abridged explanation of Leo Akaba's history and the truth behind his plans, he seems very shaken up to learn he has a sister.
** Near the end of his conversation with "Serena" (who is currently piloted by Ray), the mention of him having an older sister left him in a minor HeroicBSOD.
** When mentioning how Yusho went off to convince Leo to not go with his plans three years prior to the story, he was unprepared when Yuto immediately fly off into an angry rant.
** Seeing recordings shown by Shun of how bad the Xyz Invasion was understandably made Reiji rather horrified, and would have to reevaluate some of his plans and conundrums.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: In canon, we're left to assume he and Ray are Half-siblings since the latter's mother wasn't shown. Here, he is Ray's full-blooded younger brother as Himika existed before the fracturing of the Original Dimension.
* SilentScapegoat: While it wasn't "Serena's" intention, she told Reiji that she might've implied to Sora that ''he's the target'' of the mission that Leo sent them to retrieve for Academia, whereas the actual target is Yuzu. Reiji took this in stride as he can handle being a decoy if it would hinder his father's plan for a moment.
* SmartPeopleWearGlasses: Sports a pair of red square-rimmed glasses and is a ChildProdigy who's capable of being TheChessmaster when it comes to business and dueling.
* TheSpock: He is very analytical and logical most of the time.
* TheStoic: He rarely smiles after his father abandoned him and displays a calm, collected, and no-nonsense attitude.
* ThirdWheel: Although he isn't really friends with Yuzu and Yuya, he does feel rather awkward when seeing the two romantically interact with each other in chapter 12.
* WhenHeSmiles: One of the rare times Reiji is shown to smile is when he learned about the existence of his older sister Ray from Serena and the smile he gave is really beautiful.
* YouRemindMeOfX: Chapter 10 has Pegasus note that Reiji reminds him of Kaiba due to him being TheSpock. Humorously, this is fitting since Reiji was also a [[CompositeCharacter Composite]]/ContrastingSequelMainCharacter of Kaiba in canon.
* YoungAndInCharge: He's only 16, but is the current CEO of Leo Corporation.

The Chairwoman of Leo Duel School, and an executive member of the Leo Corporation, as well as the wife of Leo Akaba. She is the mother of Ray and Reiji Akaba, who is currently the president of the Leo Corporation.
----
* AbusiveParents: Not just to Reira, but if the flashback in Chapter 4 is any indication, she was one to Ray.
* EvilRedhead: Ray got it from her.
* EducationalMama
* FreudianExcuse: The only reason Himika turned out the way she did was that Leo vanished and decided to become a warmonger, though she has no idea behind the actual reason why he wants to conquer the other dimensions.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: In canon, Ray's mother is never shown, and we're left to assume she and Reiji are Half-siblings. Here, Himika is the mother of both.
