* ChildProdigy: What the Empire sees her as. This trope is subverted and zig-zagged in that while Tanya IS a child and has repeatedly demonstrated skills, knowledge and mental development far beyond what someone her age should have, she is also a reincarnated male human adult who is fully aware of her previous life experiences. Even Tanya admits that she was never a genius of any sort during her previous life and she simply has the benefit of a lifetime of experiences.

* ManipulativeBastard: Being X has quietly influenced Tanya's life since her birth into the new world. It granted Tanya her magical aptitude, ensuring that she would be drafted into the Empire's army no matter what she did. Being X has also influenced the people in Tanya's life to ensure that her life would be in the greatest possible danger with the goal of eventually breaking her atheist resolve. This includes giving the inventor of her Type-95 divine inspiration and a general the idea of a rapid-response team to handle crises on the front lines.

* PastLifeMemories: Tanya remains fully aware of her previous incarnation and carries over her experiences from that into her current life. Because of this, she has the skills, knowledge, drive and personality of a ruthlessly efficient modern Japanese human resources manager in addition to the military training and combat experience gained in her new world. At officer training school, Tanya used her knowledge about the UsefulNotes.SengokuJidai Sengoku Period to develop answers to theoretical battle situations and wrote a thesis paper that demonstrated efficient modern supply logistics. She has also used her knowledge about the UsefulNotes.WorldWarI first World War to (correctly) anticipate how the countries would act or react in given wartime situations. Tanya also occasionally lets slip references from her previous life such as comparing her life as a soldier to that of a Salaryman salaryman under her breath and shouting "Tamaya!" when witnessing an exploding weapon factory (Tamaya was the name of an old Japanese fireworks maker and is a word that the Japanese people often use to express their thrill for fireworks).

* AChildShallLeadThem: She fulfills this trope whenever she gets a commanding position, especially once she becomes a battalion commander at the tender age of 11. Zigzaged, as the only thing about her that is childlike is her body.
* AxCrazy: She isn't right, all right. * WrongGenreSavvy: Tanya makes constant mistakes as she forms her mage wing due to this. * AChildShallLeadThem: She fulfills this trope whenever she gets a commanding position, especially once she becomes a battalion commander at the tender age of 11. Zigzaged, as the only thing about her that is childlike is her body.
* AxCrazy: It's pretty clear from the get-go that Tanya isn't right in the head at all.
* BerserkButton: She does not take well to insubordination at all.
* TheDreaded: In both the light novels and manga, Tanya is regarded as one of their greatest threats by the enemy side. She is a "Named Ace of Aces" (noted enemy ace with over 50 kills in aerial combat) who is only recognized by her magical signature as every opponent that encounters her does not survive to see what she actually looks like. Only chance gives the Republic a look at Tanya's face.
** One of the officers on her own side regards her as this due to her abnormal mentality and proposition of Total War as a doctrine.
* EntertaininglyWrong: She frequently attempts to stand out so she can have comfortable assignment in the rear, but everything she does makes her superior see her as a model soldier who wants to fight on the front lines.
** EyeColourChange: When she uses her magic in the anime, her eyes go from blue to yellow. Her eyes also turn red when she attempts to self-destruct.
* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon: Tanya fills this in spades. Quite a number of people are taken aback by her cute stature, not aware of her pragmatic and ruthless nature.
* TheFakeCutie: Tanya is more than willing to act like an innocent little girl as a psychological tactic, whether by ramping up a puppy dog stare as the finishing blow in convincing a rival officer with a daughter to retire early, or as a means of ExactWords when she is required by law to warn an enemy position of an incoming attack... and does so in the cutest voice possible, ensuring no one listening takes the warning seriously.
* FlatEarthAtheist: The salaryman who would become Tanya doesn't believe that "God" is... well, God. And since it doesn't identify as the Devil, he decided to refer to it as "Being X". Though the applicability of this trope is rendered questionable by Being X's clear lack of omnipotence or any form of empathy.
* GenderBender: Tanya used to be a male in her previous incarnation. But with her being career-obsessed, she doesn't really pay that much attention to it.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: To certain extent; while she has absolutely no sympathy for those who fail to meet her standards for a good soldier and refuse follow her orders, she does make sure that those who prove themselves to be good soldiers get the recognition they deserve.
* HypocriticalHumor: After volunteering for the military at the tender age of 9 and distinguishing herself in her first combat engagement, Tanya wonders if there is some sort of child protection agency she can turn to when she realizes her exploits would probably get her a front line posting.
* IdiotHair: one that is just as crooked, as she is mentally.
* ImprobableAge: While the audience knows the reasons behind it, almost all the brass of the Empire's military are in awe that a little girl of 9 earned the Silver Wings Assault Badge and again when she is promoted to majorThis was forcibly done in order for the reinforced wing unit, which has 47 other people under her command to be formed , made into the de facto commander of a rapid response wing unit, and gains the prestige of being one of the military college's Twelve Knights, most of which are later granted lesser nobility status at the age of 11.
* JeanneDArchetype: Irony hilariously enough, she is shaping up into one thanks to "Being X" and its machinations.
* JerkassHasAPoint: In the last moments of her previous life, he fired a man despite his pleas. Said man had missed work without permission or reasonable excuses and had poor work performance despite multiple warnings.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While her twisted nature and lack of empathy are core parts of her nature, that's not all to her, as she will give anyone who is willing to push themselves and show competence their due respect, and is more than willing to be cordial to Corporal Serebryakof and put her on the fast track to an officer's rank through Tanya's own recommendation. Tanya even laments how Viktoriya has gotten used to the battlefield, no longer crying at the sight of the carnage.
* LackOfEmpathy: Tanya is incapable of thinking of others and everything she does is for her own selfish goals.
* LaughingMad: She does this very often, The first time, chronologically, is when she's told to hold off a squad by herself for ten minutes; note that this was her first combat situation, then telling her that God is on their side.
* LimitedWardrobe: She is rarely seen out of her military uniforms.
* MaskOfSanity: Tanya is capable of pretending to be a capable and loyal, if brutal officer as well as a sympathetic human being who cares for others. Only Rerugen and those unfortunate enough to end up as her subordinates have been able to see past her mask thus far.
* NoNameGiven: We never learn the name of Tanya's previous incarnation.
* OrphansOrdeal: Invoked and Discussed, Tanya uses this as her excuse for joining the military at her ridiculously young age. Telling a classmate from the military college that as an orphan she didn't have much choice in employment despite her talent and intelligence.
* ProfessionalButtKisser: She is basically never not thinking about career advancement and every word from her lips is either a truth or a lie intended to help her advance.
* RageAgainstTheHeavens: Tanya goes from being an atheist to full on misotheist after being forced to pray to God in order for her Elenium Type-95 to work, calling Being X "A vile piece of shit."
* TheRedBaron: "Argent" ("Hakugin") by her own side. The "Devil of the Rhine" by her enemies.
* ReincarnateInAnotherWorld: Tanya had this done to her by Being X at the start of the series.
* ReligiousBruiser: An involuntary example; she is forced to pray god by Being X every time she uses her Type-45.
* SlasherSmile: She gives these all the time.
* SoldiersAtTheRear: Most of Tanya's actions throughout the series are motivated by her desire to gain an easy and safe rear echelon job, however her own butt kissing as well as Being X's intervention make this task pretty much impossible.
* ThousandYardStare: PlayedForLaughs, Tanya gets these when she is forced to have a makeover for propaganda photos.
* VillainProtagonist: It's right there in the title. She is arrogant, ruthless, egoistic and only interested in personal benefit. When it comes to achieving her goals, she is willing to do anything to achieve them.
* WriteWhatYouKnow: An in-universe example, while in officer school, Tanya wrote a thesis for logistical streamlining based off modern distribution and inventory practices.
* WrongGenreSavvy: Tanya makes constant mistakes as she forms her mage wing due to this. For a rationalist born in pacifistic Japan, Tanya reckons that emphasizing WarIsHell would be enough to drive away all potential recruits to her wing. However the prevailing attitude among the military is that WarIsGlorious and thus they see her harsh pamphlets as nothing more than an exhortation for them to display their patriotism. Tanya forgets that the espirit de corps of the Imperial Army is especially strong and the other armies are just itching to help out their comrades in the Northern and Western armies. Particularly egregious as Tanya should be aware that it was the First World War (which she is currently living through) that finally did in the notion of a glorious and honorable war.
* YouHaveFailedMe: In the first episode Tanya decides to send two of her subordinates back home for insubordination. They protest her decision so instead she has them reassigned to man a fortified pillbox

Added DiffLines:

----
* GodsNeedPrayerBadly: The driving force behind Being X and its complaints with the lacking quantity of faith within humanity as a whole. It's also what makes it go through with the experiment due to the possibility of restoring this lost faith in it once more, using Tanya, an atheist, as test-subject.
* JerkassGods: Being X is so fed up with people not being as faithful as they used to, that it basically takes the biggest atheist it can find and put him, now her, in situations where she is forced to pray in order to become devout. That this impiety is more important to it than the other ills of the world (to the point where it muses that eliminating modern 1st world comforts and basic safety would be a great way to restore people's faith, hence its kicking off the plot to test this) does not paint it in a very positive light.

Added DiffLines:

----
* AdaptationalCurves: To go along with her AdaptationDyeJob, Viktoriya is notably more voluptuous in the anime compared to her manga and light novel versions. This is negated by her flight uniform so it is not really noticeable.
* AdaptationDyeJob: She has blond hair in the Manga but gets orange Mikuru hair in the anime.
* TheBusCameBack: While admittingly it was a short bus ride, she left as a corporal and returned as a second lieutenant and Tanya's adjutant.
* DiggingYourselfDeeper: Tanya has an unfortunate habit of doing this without intending to. From explaining why people faith in God has dwindled leading her to becoming Tanya in the first place, all the way to how explaining to a Brigadier General how the world could be going into the World War and what it would need to be able to fight in it which in turns leads her to being promoted into a major and leading her own battalion when all she wanted was to be a rear echelon.
* GenreSavvy: Viktoria is well aware that she is living through a WarIsHell story during Tanya's intensive training regimen rather than a WarIsGlorious story. When Tanya is talking about helping out a friendly artillery unit, Viktoria is already grabbing an entrenching tool and digging herself a shellscrape while the rest of the wing is still gaping at their commander.
* ImpoverishedPatrician: Implied due to her being chased off by alternate rendition of the Red Army during the fall of the expy Russian Empire.
