* TheFundamentalist: He wants everyone in The United States to adhere to his particular interpretation of the Christian Bible, including things that aren't actually in the Bible but Sovereign thinks should be. The amazons, being reborn in bodies granted to them by Hellenistic deities, are among those he does not want in his country at all.
* TheHeavy: The Sovereign is taking advantage of the tragedies orchestrated by a villain with international ambitions to push his smaller scale national ambitions. The more ambitious villain is hidden not just from the general public but from the reader entirely, so Sovereign gets more time on panel. He ends up taking more time to defeat even after the wider scope villain is revealed.

->''" My whole life, I had been afraid of doing what I knew needed to be done. Afraid to give all of myself to the battle. The helmet showed me that my codes and rules were naive. That all that truly mattered was victory. And now I would finally take it for myself."''

The Merciless is the Batman of Earth -12. When he donned Ares' helmet to defeat the God of War, Bruce realized that peace and morality were falsehoods, and that the absolute destruction of his enemies was the only way forward. He eventually joined the Dark Knights, a team of evil Batmen from alternate realities.

* AcidAttack: The gorgon's serpentine locks produce their own corrosive toxin which debilitates and sears those affected by it.
* TheAgeless: Being of divine blood, she and her sisters do not age.
* BodySurf: In DC Rebirth her shade escapes Hades, makes it past Doom's Door and begins possessing amazons on Themyscira as a ghost.
* CompellingVoice: Has been blessed by Circe with a vocal allure that compels others to turn towards her gaze when calling to them.
* {{Curse}}: Her powers are a result of a curse placed on her by Athena.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: It takes several defeats over the course of "Rebirth" but when Nubia hits her with a new weapon that proves capable of removing the Gorgon curse Medusa has a change of heart and decides to join the amazons of Themyscira.
* GorgeousGorgon: Is the leader of the Gorgons, is smoking hot, and likes to flaunt her body. Granted, she's less hot in some continuities than others.
* LosingYourHead: Her head has survived multiple decapitations.
* {{Medusa}}: The original.
* RedemptionDemotion: Medusa's HeelFaceTurn in Rebirth causes her to lose her gorgon body and powers. She does get to keep her semi immortality due to being made an official amazon of Themyscira, however.
* RoguesGalleryTransplant: Thrice. Despite her origins in Greek mythology, Medusa first appeared in an issue of ''Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane'' before going to become a regular opponent of Wonder Woman. On Prime Earth, she has primarily been a foe of ComicBook/{{Batwoman}}. Come DC Rebirth and she becomes more associated with Nubia than Diana.
* SiblingsInCrime: Is frequently assisted by her sisters Euryale and Stheno.
* SuperpowerLottery: A loser of it, as she does not have the same immortality of her sisters, due to being a cursed Gorgon rather than one by birth. However, DC's Medusa enjoys much greater longevity than her mythological counterpart.
* SuperStrength: Can go toe-to-toe with Wonder Woman.
* SuperToughness: Can go toe-to-toe with Wonder Woman.
* TakenForGranite: Can turn people to stone with her gaze.
* TruerToTheText: She has wings, an aspect that frequently appears in archaic Greek portrayal of gorgons, but that isn't present in later depictions, especially in contemporary pop culture.
* UngratefulBastard: When her shade gets past Doom's Door and she becomes a {{body surf}}ing ghost, Nubia asks her to stop on the condition the Hippolyta had preserved Medusa's head and they can use it to restore Medusa's body. While this does stop Medusa's ghost antics, it doesn't stop her attacks on the amazons, leading to a thrashing from Nubia. [[DownplayedTrope However]], when this leads to Medusa [[BeatTheCurseOutOfHim losing Athena's gorgon curse]] she does show gratitude to Nubia and offers to serve her as an amazon.
