No it couldn't be done with magic. No she couldn't have any pain relief barring a rock to bite down on. The scene was so graphic that the author placed warnings to help readers avoid the section.

* HorrorTransformation: Her transformation into an Onigumo was slow, humiliating and above all painful. So much so that she had to be put into a coma for more than a year to keep her from losing her mind from the feeling of [[spoiler: her skin melting and her bones dissolving as she went from having a human endoskeleton to an insectoid exoskeleton.]]. What she's required to [[MeatgrinderSurgury go through]] to start the transformation is so horrendous that the author had to put warnings in bold text at the start and end of the section of the story showing it just so anybody who didn't want to could avoid reading it.

She develops debilitating cramps which hampers her ability to even stand up straight, let alone fight. To resolve this, she uses a spell that allows her to [[FightingAShadow project her mind into a specially created Gumo Khan]].

* MetaMorphosis: As Uncle explains, Jade's transformation into a Jorōgumo is probably permanent, because her true form has been altered (unlike her past transformations when her form was simply disguised with magic).

* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: He chews out Daolon Wong for his willingness the cast away his humanity for the sake of power. He also says that he doesn't respect Wong enough to hate him, instead pitying him.

* GeniusBruiser: He's a sumo and a fully realised chi wizard.

* IJustWantToBeSpecial: She realises that after her time being under the influence of the chi of Hsi Wu, she has subconsciously wanted to fly again and do things she hasn't done during her life as an ordinary member of the society. It's part of the reason [[spoiler:she decides to remain as an Oni, in addition to trying to help Jade out of the brink]].

* ShutUpHannibal: When Tarakudo tries to get in Hartman's head, she delivers an epic TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to him regarding not only her hatred towards him for what he has done to Jade, but also that once Jade realises that it's ''he'' who needs ''her'' and not the other way around, he has nothing left.

* FreakyIsCool: He savours in his new monstrous appearance.

* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler:After being beaten and BroughtDownToNormal, Valmont [[LaughingMad breaks down and laughs]] as he's arrested, believing that his life is a joke only he gets, telling Jackie that ''he'' won in the end because there was nowhere they could put him that was ''worse'' than the crummy apartment that he was in before, and at least in jail he'll have three meals a day, and sarcastically wishes them good luck in their constant, thankless and futile quest against the supernatural]].

** She recognizes how crazed and evil [[spoiler:[[OmnicidalManiac Leston]], and they are the first person she hasn't had any problem trying to kill]].

She has even been attacking and killing innocents under Jade's nose. [[spoiler:Part of the Old Queen's deal with her is that the Queen will make her ''even more inhuman'' if she succeeds in taking Jade out.]]
