* TheApprentice: His mentor, Oatspeckle, died two moons before Mapleshade’s kits are born. He never had an apprentice of his own because Mapleshade kills him.
* CannotKeepASecret: He was the medicine cat who told the rest of his Clan about Mapleshade's kits leading into their exile.

* DeathByIrony: Mapleshade kills him at Mothermouth (a sacred location for medicine cats) and later digs up his body after it has been buried so that the hawks can eat his corpse.
* DesecratingTheDead: After he was buried by his fellow medicine cats, Mapleshade dug up his corpse and left it to be eaten by hawks, in revenge for getting her and her kits kicked out of [=ThunderClan=].
* HonorBeforeReason: When he found out that Mapleshade's kits were half-[=RiverClan=] and fathered by Appledusk, he immediately told the rest of the Clan, even though he knew it would put them in danger because Oakstar wouldn't react well to the news of Appledusk, his son's killer, having fathered kits in his Clan.
* SuccessionCrisis: He had no apprentice at the time of his death, forcing Cloudberry of [=RiverClan=] to fill in.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: If he'd just kept quiet about Mapleshade and her kits, they wouldn't have been driven out of [=ThunderClan=], the kits wouldn't have drowned trying to cross the river, and Mapleshade wouldn't have had a reason to become the most feared cat in the Dark Forest.

[=ThunderClan's=] medicine cat while Pinestar was leader, and early during Sunstar's reign. Sometimes acts insane, but is also fairly wise. However, his predictions are sometimes disastrous for the Clan. ''Crookedstar's Promise'' reveals that he's had some association with the Dark Forest, but the extent of this and his reasons for it are unclear.

Stars in a 2015 novella titled ''Goosefeather's Curse''.

* BreakTheCutie: She started off life as a warrior before being forced into becoming a medicine cat because of her powers. She later has kits, even though she is a medicine cat, with a cat who later essentially refuses to acknowledge her existence, although it is speculated that they may have become traditional mates if her circumstances were different. Only one of her three kits, Brokenstar, manages to survive birth. Yellowfang must then give up her remaining kit to a queen who refuses to love him. Yellowfang now has to watch her son grow up without knowing of his full heritage. Brokenstar eventually kills his father and kicks his mother (though he doesn't know it) out of [=ShadowClan=], allegedly for killing her own younger siblings (her mother is distraught enough over this that she winds up in the Place of No Stars after her death). Finally, Yellowfang is forced to kill Brokenstar in order to save her new Clan.
