Hay Lin is creative, free-spirited, and loves both fashion and the arts, but she's also a huge nerd obsessed with comic books/anime, space and sci-fi stuff. Usually, the tomboyish but doubtful leader Will is often contrasted against [[TheLancer lancer]] Cornelia. And serious Cornelia is often paired against laid-back and funny Irma.

* AdaptationNameChange: A minor note. In the comics, her full name was "Wilhelmina"; it was changed to "Wilma" in the cartoon.

* FiveTokenBand: Will is redheaded, Irma is brunette, Taranee is African America, Cornelia is blonde, and Hay Lin is Asian.

* IJustWantToBeSpecial: In "A is for Anonymous" she fears that no more Guardian life means she'll become an "anonymous wallflower" again. [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming Her best friends prove her wrong.]]

* DevilInPlainSight: Back when he was a villain, Cedric was able to make him walk around Heatherfield in broad daylight with rather minimalistic disguises. In the very first issue he went at a Halloween party with no disguise at all and wearing his normal clothes. [[CrowningMomentOfFunny He won the prize for the best costume]].

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's stubborn, jumps to conclusions, and [[MyBelovedSmother has a tendency to be an overbearing mother]]. But all she wants is to keep her kids safe. [[CrowningMomentOfHeartwarming That's a lifetime sentence.]]

You wouldn't be faulted for only knowing her by her first name, as what is likely to be her surname; Ethel; is mentioned vaguely exactly once (in the Season 1 episode "Divide and Conquer"), by Blunk of all characters, when he's trying to delay Cedric hunting down Will (or Irma, given the red hair comment).

* AdaptationalSexuality: Creator/GregWeisman [[WordOfGay claims]] that the animated version of the character is a lesbian, and she noticeably lacks a romantic interest. The comic counterpart has a boyfriend, however, and even in the show Irma expresses clear interest in Andrew Hornby, which would [[BiTheWay make her bisexual rather than a lesbian]].

* ArrogantKungFuGuy: {{Averted}}. Knows martial arts, but doesn't act all haughty about it. At the beginning of the New Power Arc she becomes arrogant and overconfident like the rest of her friends, but Yan Lin, whom she rescues from Dark Mother, talks her down from it.

* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler: He dies TakingTheBullet for Orube in the comics.]]]

* BitchInSheepsClothing: In the comics, after Cedric tells her who she is, she immediately schemes with him to lure her friends, the new Guardians, into a trap. This is while she poses as their friend, even appearing to Hay Lin at a funeral. Unlike in the show, where she was justifiably angry that they didn't tell her about being the lost princess of Meridian, the Guardians find out about their powers long after Elyon learns about hers. Fortunately, she switches back to the Guardians side after getting a much-needed HeelRealization.

* PutOnABus: In the comic, after the Meridian storyline is over. Like Caleb, she makes occasional cameos later on but is mostly gone from the story. Averted in the animated series, in which she remains an important character in the second season (she didn't appear in the "Nerissa" arc of the comic, aside from a special issue completely dedicated to her).

* TheFarmerAndTheViper: At one point, he's captured by the rebels of Meridian and sentenced to execution; Will saves him at risk to her own live, and Cedric immediately attacks her and tries to kill her. It's the sight of this that gets both Vathek to pull a HeelFaceTurn ''and'' Elyon to doubt that Phobos and his regime are as clean as he claims they are.
