Notably, he was accepted into CalTech, which is no mean feat, but lacked the discipline to complete his education there. Throughout the film he displays qualities of this trope by being very quick on the uptake and able to adjust quickly to new conditions.

The idea stems from the fact that the writers and artists seem to have designed Beck to be what is essentially a non-evil Rinzler in appearance and fighting style, and a major plot point is that he is conditioned to be a replacement Tron. ** Hell, the design for Beck is purely a RuleOfCool, and ultimately does not support the theory. Especially since Kevin Flynn would recognize his programs without fail. More importantly the above reference to Rinzler being voiced by Bruce. That pretty much subverts the AmbiguousSituation entirely.
