* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: Unlike most oni, who focus on brute strength, Zanmu's specialty is in scheming. Although this dosen't stop Zanmu being strong enough that even Reimu is outright scared of fighting her at full power, and an Oni as strong as Sukia resorts to schemes instead of direct confrontation.

Rereading the dialogue, it seems like this is Suika lying to them in a failed attempt at getting them to turn on Zanmu. Zanmu invites them over to the victory party and they still refer to Zanmu as Master in Hisami's story mode, which takes place after theirs.

Not a characterization trope.

* BlindIdiotTranslation: Early english translations of her omake profile interpreted the wording as indicating she canonically had a crush on Zanmu. While there are very strong signs this may be the case, as explained above, ultimately the actual phrasing used is typically used to describe a specific kind of strong respect for a leader which crosses into adoration, fitting ZUN's [[NoHuggingNoKissing aversion to explicit romantic relationships between characters]] in the series text itself.
Is there an issue? Send a MessageReason:
I suggest following what the translators wrote, specifically "慕う has rare usage in a romantic sense. It's often used in workplace/group dynamics to convey admiration toward a powerfully inspirational and skillful leader. "Adoration" may still be too strong a word, but respect doesn't convey how strong the feeling is."

It is absolutely ambiguous, and not merely a translation error, especially when the Japanese fanbase notably treats the situation identically to the western in this regard. As a result, Ambiguously Gay is still the proper trope to describe her at current, as her dialogue with Suika, panting when asked to be punished, and overall bizarrely obsessed attitude for a touhou character mean that she's easily the most "ambiguously gay" one has ever been, and nowhere in any japanese material is she stated to not be attracted to Zanmu, only that she had adoration which remains ambiguous as to its precise meaning.

However, Hisami ends up being so into the idea that she not only ''asked'' Zanmu to scold her, but she purposefully disobeys Zanmu's orders to stand guard in the final story route, potentially foiling her master's plans in the hopes of being punished by her. Fortunately for Zanmu herself, she was perfectly aware of Hisami's ploy.

That being said, her dialogue in VS. Mode with Suika and Zanmu ''extremely'' strongly hint her attitude towards Zanmu is romantic, due to being right out of a variety of generic lines associated with romantic pining in shoujo manga, and her bizarre desire to be scolded and punished by her would be strange for a mere adoring underling, but it's not outright stated all the same.
