* OlderThanTheyLook: He doesn't look much older than Vance, but he seems to have been acquainted [[spoiler:King Carolus]] since the first Kaibutsu War, meaning that he's at least in his 60s. Then, if Vance's dream/vision of him [[spoiler:walking together with ''the founder of the Govan order'']] means anything, it would make him ReallySevenHundredYearsOld.

* HopelessBossFight: Occurs twice in a row, during the first journey to Durham. In the first encounter, Benson pulls a Death Technique that almost killes Vance, and in the second encounter, Mauldin uses a Sleep spell on the party before escaping. Unlike most examples, however, the story will only progress when they defeat the party with the aforementioned techniques. If they defeat you normally, it will be a game over.

* CoolOldGuy: He is actually quite brilliant in alchemy – having the knowledge to create Phoenix Elixir – whose recipe is apparently unknown even to The Govan – an ancient alchemist order.

* MysteriousWaif: Kanna is introduced as the secretive and enigmatic, yet very powerful, sorceress whose affiliations with the Govan and Duke Greene causes both her team mates and the audience to suspect her true goals. [[SubvertedTrope However, she turned out to be more straightforward than she initially seemed]]: she wasn't lying about her motives -- she genuinely wants to help the heroes, not realizing the darker intentions of her order when they sent her to aid Vance and the others, and her cryptic persona is caused by her lack of social skills rather than a deliberate attempt to keep secrets.

His only drawback is that his special skills aren't particularly useful, but he's such a capable fighter that those skills are actually not necessary.

* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon: Catwaba is almost angelic-looking, having a pair of tender blue eyes and a sweet smile. Of course, being a Kaibutsu lord, she is actually cruel and manipulative.

* BelligerentSexualTension: With Duchess Fayette. Even though he frequently insults her, he definitely cares about her, and nearly goes on a rampage against Benson and Mauldin when they appeared to have harmed her.

* ItsPersonal: Has some sentiment against Benson after the latter almost killed him in Pittsboro.

* HeroicBSOD: North experienced a massive breakdown after facing Catawba the Perserve Idealogue [[spoiler: when the latter revealed that she had been posing North’s fiancée and that their relationship was a big, fat lie]].

* TraumaCongaLine: Experienced a long series of misfortune between the second and third act. [[spoiler:First, he was captured by pirates, separating him from his fiancée. He managed to escape, but just as he was returning home, Duke Greene blew up the town, killing everyone, including North's fiancée. Swearing revenge, North returned to his martial arts school to train, but right after he learnt his final techniques, Orrum showed up and killed North's master (whom North considers a father figure). North returned to Somerset to hunt Orrum down and came back just in time to witness Orrum murder his real father and get away with it.]]

* BelligerentSexualTension: With Vance. She frequently derails him and beats him up for his rudeness and moral ambiguity, but later admits that she enjoys travelling with him.

* MysteriousPast: There are numerous hints that [[spoiler:he used to be a Kaibutsu Lord]] but details of his BackStory are never fully revealed. In fact, what little hints we get of his past only serve to raise more questions about his nature and identity.

* SmallNameBigEgo: At the start of the game, Vance was just a wimp carrying a dull switchblade, but thinks he’s tough enough to face Clifton and gets his ass kicked for it. This is0 subverted later, as he TookALevelInBadass and becomes one of the strongest characters in the game.

Vance's best friend, and a practitioner of the Kita martial arts. North went missing at the start of the game, and Vance’s quest to search for him led them both to the heart of the conflict.

The Duchess of Burlington, daughter of Duke Salem. The BigBad is after her for some reason.

A wandering monk who rescued Vance in Pittsboro after the latter was LeftForDead by Benson. He travelled along with Vance to find new challenges, but is later revealed to have a much deeper involvement with the conflict than he initially lets on.

An alchemist who belongs to [[TheOmniscientCouncilOfVagueness the Govan order]]. Kanna first appeared in Branchville, where she intervened with the battle between Burlington and Dillon by blowing up the field. She later joins the party after saving Vance, Fayette and Anderson from Benson and Mauldin.

Holly is the self-proclaimed “world famous thief” whom North encountered in Raleigh’s ship. She is later revealed to be Clifton’s niece and resides in Burlington.

Tatum, A.K.A the Bandit Queen, is the leader of a criminal group who hides out in Kershaw. She accompanied Kanna to Kershaw Lighthouse when the latter needed to revive Vance. She has a crush on Anderson.

* AmbiguouslyHuman: Vance believes Anderson to be [[spoiler:a Kaibutsu Lord, namely Teachy the Discordian]]. That last part is eventually disproved, but his exact nature remains unclear.

* WalkingSpoiler: Most of the spoilered tropes in the game involves this guy.

* MommasBoy: Vance is rude and fearless towards everyone and everything except his mother. He'd mouth-off to opponents that can beat him up, but fears his mother's wrath -– and while he appears to dislike his father, he freaks out when he believes his mother is in danger.

* SkippableBoss: The Kaibutsu Lords Hunt arc does not actually require the party to kill all 7 of the Lords, and the story would move on to a different goal after defeating four (or after encountering Teachy. Depending on which of the 4 the player chooses to fight, the remaining Bosses would become "skippable".

* TheDreaded: Being a member of the legendary Govan order, [[ThoseTwoBadGuys Benson and Mauldin]] are terrified at the prospect of fighting her, and immediately runs off when she presents herself in her shrine. Of course, her reputation actually precedes her, as she's not actually a good fighter without her alchemical weapons (which are very hard to create).

* ThoseTwoGuys: Gastonia is almost never seen without Whitaker, and the two are always bickering.

* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Despite his cruelty, Greene appears to genuinely care for his sister [[spoiler:Lucama]], his friend Roper and his lover Castallia, and before his final death, he expresses regret for failing them.

* ThatManIsDead: When Lockhart remarks how Anderson has gone soft for not immediately killing him after the former tole an important artefact from the team, Anderson replies that the man he used to be is already dead.

* PragmaticHero: He does most of his good deeds for money, and is willing to cheat and blackmail others to get more cash, but knows when not to cross the line.

* UnderestimatingBadassery: He does not consider the heroes as a threat, especially since Haselle is aiding him, and did not fight them seriously. This bites him back in the ass when [[spoiler:Vance (who, until then, had been knocked out) kills her while he was still fighting the others, and that distraction actually lead to his demise]].

* WhiteMage: She was taught healing magic by Marion.

The protagonist of ''Three The Hard Way''. Vance started out as a bartender in Somerset, but later becomes a bounty hunter in hopes of earning money and becoming rich and famous.

* BackFromTheDead: He was killed by Benson and Mauldin in at the end of Act 2, but was revived by Kanna and Lucama.

* RedHeadedHero: North is the classic RPG hero to Vance's AntiHero. Whereas Vance would try to extort money before he would do anything to help someone, North would volunteer because it's the right thing to do. He's also much more emotional and passionate than Vance (who, despite his abrasive nature, is actually quite detached).
